This book is *You’ve Got Mail* (Am I aging myself with that reference?) in a fantasy based WWI-type setting. (…perhaps it’s WWII - if I’m honest, history isn’t my strong suit). The blossoming love story is enchanting (Sublime? Transcendent? Divine, perhaps?!) and the main characters are quirky, slightly broken in their own ways, and endearing.
However, despite my enjoyment of a good love story, I found the backdrop of the book - the gods, their war, the land’s history with the gods, etc. to be vague and somewhat incomprehensible. We learn a bit of the mythology of the land as the MC’s correspond with one another, but with the vague background knowledge we’re given, it seems insufficient to account for the breadth of human participation in the revenge plot of the two gods… Perhaps I can look forward to a deeper understanding of the motivations of the gods and the humans they’ve inspired to go to war on their behalf in book 2?
…I think I’d have given this a 3.5 if able, but rounding to 4 stars because my inability to wrap my head around the mythos of the land didn’t dim my enjoyment of the story as a whole.
