[3.5] I really want to love this book. It's one of the big LGBT books that's made it into the mainstream world, and that's fucking awesome. I wish more could do so. But here's the deal. I am deeply uncomfortable with how the book glorifies a relationship with a minor. Elio is clearly young and inexperienced to say the least, and Oliver is at the house to do research with Elio's Father. There are weird power dynamics at play that make their relationship concerning regardless of the age of consent. Furthermore, this is yet ANOTHER white and wealthy male-male relationship; we need more diversity in the LGBT genre. The family has a private residence they exclusively use in the summer, they invite/host a research assistant every year. This is not the reality for so many people in the queer community. Lastly, Andre Aciman is a straight man profiting off the quintessential LGBT story. I'm not really sure what to make of that. On one hand I appreciate the ally and inclusivity, but on the other hand I question his right and authority to speak this story to truth.
