May change to five stars after further contemplation 

When I read the synopsis for this book, I was instantly intrigued. I enjoyed learning more about Singapore’s history and how it was interwoven with the magical elements of the story. Adeline was a captivating main character, and I also loved Tian as a character. There was always something happening plot-wise. 

I do have a few critiques. I felt like I didn’t get the chance to learn about or feel connected to many of the side characters, so I didn’t feel much of an emotional reaction towards certain scenes. Additionally, after Adeline joined the Butterflies, I felt like event after event would happen without much time dedicated to character growth. I would've liked to have seen more about Adeline’s adjustment to a new lifestyle, as well as the relationship growth between Adeline and Tian. 

Overall, this book was a great mix of history, engaging plot, and likeable characters. I would definitely recommend checking this book out.

I absolutely devoured this story. I normally don’t enjoy the summer, but this book made me want to lie in an overgrown garden on a hot day. I loved this depiction of botanical horror and how the vivid plant-like imagery and metaphors seeped into all aspects of the story. 

Evander and Laurie felt so real and genuine to me. Their interactions were so endearing and their connection was unquestionable even before the mysteries that lay between them were uncovered. 

I was able to guess some aspects of the plot, but that didn’t even matter to me since I was so absorbed in the atmosphere and C.G. Drews’ captivating prose. Certain moments had me so stressed for the characters that it felt like a vine tightening around my heart. The eeriness of the garden could be felt off the page. 

Overall, this book is a wonderful mix of mystery, romance, and botanical horror. I definitely see myself rereading this in the future.
