This story never seems straightforward to me and always leaves me thinking as all the best stories do.

I listened to the audiobook narrated by Wanda McCaddon and enjoyed the narration.

I picked this up cheap on a recommendation from a bookseller and it surprised me. The first half I felt that it was ok, a fun read but nothing special. I ended enjoying the second half a lot and the reveals (though I saw some of them coming. The world has some interesting facets even if a little 2 dimensional at times and some characters were stronger than other but I definitely want to read the sequel so for what it is, I enjoyed it.

I feel bad cause I almost never do this, but I did not finish this one. About 60% of the way I still couldn’t figure out if anything was going to really happen. I retuned it to the library cause it was due but left it in my books thinking I’d get it again and finish but over a month later, I’m still not feeling it. I mean, I liked the school narrative and learning and introspection or whatever but usually novels have some sort of building action. Maybe my problem was listening to the audio book, I don’t feel like this book was maybe well suited for audio, I don’t know. I want to come back to it in print and try again sometime because I love Numair and was really excited about this book, but for now I’m just throwing in the towel.

Don’t be fooled by the intended audience. This book is for everyone. It is poignant and powerful.

I definitely enjoyed reading this, but I definitely got distracted by some plot jumps and the inconsistent narration point of view. I personally feel that books with multiple characters in 3rd person need to have sections only told from one perspective, and it’s clear that was the goal. However there were some sloppy sections where it starts off with Finn and then you’re suddenly ALSO seeing Claudia’s thoughts and I was taken off guard. But it was a fun read.
