Beatryce never makes any decisions in the book except to let men rescue her (yes, I know she is a child, but the other child is a master sword fighter out of nowhere). The characters have no personality, and the narrative depends on cliché and fails to connect with the reader emotionally even in moments of the characters' deepest vulnerabilities.
