Saccharine and sentimental, Children of the Jacaranda Tree is an unatmospheric volume filled with an overabundance of pregnant women protectively laying a hand over their bellies. Seriously, it happens like 6 separate times. The author has got to have some sort of a breeding kink or something.

It's crazy to think that Henry James intended this to be a potboiler. It's literally unreadable. I'm a lit student and the syntax in this gave me a stroke.

Sprawling but not substantial, inventive but not creative, well-researched but lacking atmosphere, witty but lacking insight - Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell is 1006 pages' worth of not much at all, sprinkled through with a pinch of classic British self-centeredness.

Surprisingly way better and less cringe than I expected John Green to be. I had a lot of fun. It's genuinely funny in parts. I thought maybe I'd give Mr Green a chance so I read the first chapter of The Fault In Our Stars that came free with the book and oh my god it gave me cancer... take that as you will I guess
I've read almost all of Dickens' works, but this one is extraordinarily dull. I tried. I really did. I couldn't get through it. It really is ...bleak... *sitcom laugh track*

Powerful message of awareness, but it's very clearly made by white people for white people. And it's got a bit of a white savior narrative, who am I kidding it's got a SERIOUS white savior narrative.
