I can't shake the eerie, empty feeling this book has left me with. I finished it at 3 a.m. last night and could not bring myself to fall asleep til 5. .
The way it spirals from a narrative about a sad and innocent young teenager, to a frenzied, nightmarish tale of unending pain and horror... It was particularly terrifying because at the start of the story, the main character is so... relatable. A lonely, book-loving teenager who feels misunderstood by her parents, and only wants someone or something to love. I...sobbed so many times while reading. Because I saw myself, and that doubled, tripled the pain. Through it all, the message is stark and clear:
IT COULD HAPPEN TO ANYONE.
Drugs are dangerous things with a vicious iron grip; lost and hurt kids who succumb to them just to make themselves feel SOMETHING other than abject misery are not weak-minded. Not losers. Not broken or ruined or defeated. They are simply fellow humans in need. I pray that anybody who struggles with addiction, of any sort, finds help before it is too late.
On to more technical aspects. I loved the fragmented pacing and the several subtle shifts in lingo, and the written details that outline unwritten ones? It's pure genius. Go Ask Alice really does read just like a diary. That is not to say that it hasn't got much literary value beyond Angsty Teen Says Angsty Things - no, it's ...beautiful, in a dark and tortured way. It's opressive, it's moving and massive, and above all - frighteningly atmospheric. I felt suffocated and depressed and WOW. I'm blown away, and I'll never read it ever again.

Recommended to me by a couple friends, this dear little novel lived up to all my expectations. Valancy Stirling is a delightful character, and you can't help but root for her all the way of her journey from anxious, emotionally abused and sad, to a happy, thriving woman living the life she's always dreamed of. The story is touching and never drags, for I loved all the descriptive passages. I also loved the romantic aspect, which isn't common for me - but her relationship with Barney was so wholesome and sweet. I think the one thing I disliked was that it was ...slightly predictable? Like, I totally saw a couple of the final plot twists coming. But I'm not too much bothered by that. They were very lovely plot twists and I am actually glad my predictions came true.
To end on a happy note, another pleasant thing about this novel is its comedic aspect. Every scene in which my girl Valancy shocks the other members of the Stirling is simply hilarious, not to mention satisfying.

My god. How have I not heard of this before? Absolute genius. The ..I just...ah? I can't. The way the writing style from the main character's POV progresses from sounding totally normal, to near insanity...it's terribly striking. And she's such a sweet, tired lady, too..ach. I feel horrible for her. The symbolism is clear enough and WOW. I'm blown away. Definitely one of the best short stories I have ever read.

I read this book when I was little and I don't remember a lot about it other than that there was a lady wyvern who loved chocolate and a smol baby wyvern. And that I thought it was very cute.

What a curious little book. It wasn't necessarily scary - definitely unsettling though. It left me confused and a little upset. Written like a police report, almost, but far more...lacunar?? Dang, it's a strange work.
