Please don't read this lol it's ableist and just plain Bad. Like not just offensive, it is straightup Poorly Written, I'm talking inconsistencies, plotholes, telling instead of showing, repetition, rushed plot points etc etc it's not horrible i guess but like. I swiped this off my friend's shelf during a sleepover morning while waiting for her to wake up and wound up getting so interested that i blew through the whole thing in three hours. They
They Both Die At The End by Adam Silvera explores a world where you receive a phone call on the day of your death. The story follows two boys, brought together by an app called Last Friend, who have received such a call and want to live this last day to its fullest. (And yes it is gay. Canonically. You just gotta wait for it.)
The style was simple, the tone compassionate. There's a soft yet deep-seated humanity to all these two boys do and say, and i don't really have any complaints. I mean, this book really hits its mark. It avoids the melodrama i was worried it would careen facefirst into (being a YA book, after all) and has some real hard-hitting lines in it (swipe to see one that low-key punched me in the gut). Still, for some reason, it didn't make me as sad as I hoped/expected. Maybe i was in too good of a mood overall?? Or maybe I kinda *cough cough* kind of already knew *cough* that they both die *cough cough cough* *eyes title*
Even so, I've no complaints. If you've had your eye on this book but are undecided because it's YA and therefore liable to be cringy and simplistic and tropey, know from me that it is not. It's one hell of a little gut-puncher, and defininitely worth reading.
