Counting this towards my reading goal idc. I love character design books and this was no exception! It was very fun to see all the little intricate details from one of my most important childhood media

The english translation, in my opinion, made a crucial mistake in not translating the name.

Ella, not as a name but as a pronoun, Her, is a young woman working on a physics thesis. As she works day in and day out on her thesis, she finds herself wishing she would fall ill, if only to allow herself a break from her work on top of her teaching job.

As her wish comes true and she comes down with a mysterious illness, she is forced to reflect on her family’s history of illness and their complicated dynamics.

Adorned with metaphors of astronomy and anatomy, we are transported to the center of this family’s cosmos, with intertwining points of view; from Her doctor father to Her increasingly distant partner, Him , who finds himself caught up in a conflict that only draws Him further away

A heavy , emotionally suffocating read , perhaps a bit too much so, with beautiful prose and vivid imagery, that leaves you feeling hurting bleeding for everyone involved

I’ve been sitting here trying to find the words to do justice to what’s easily my newest favorite read. Featuring a trans boy from a multicultural latinx family trying to prove his identity in a heavily gendered environment, it beautifully captures the nuances of transness in a multi-generational context, all in the  setting of an extremely important cultural holiday, flawlessly weaving tradition and change.

The author handles every single cultural and family aspect with great care and love, making it easy for these characters to feel like family of my own

Maybe it was this love for the characters that prevented me from seeing the final twist , which kept me at the edge of my seat and with my heart in my throat

A beautiful, touching debut novel, Cemetery boys is an ode to latinidad , queerness, family, and even death itself; you can feel the author’s love through their writing and that in itself is so important to me

10/10 , Truly cannot recommend it enough
