What I've found with all of Couplands works I've read so far is he writes really funny easy to read books with very well written believable characters. However like in his other works I find I'm commonly waiting for something to happen with the plot itself. It feels that the book ends once you've really fully engaged with the character and are ready for the adventure to begin. It's a nice fun book to sit down and read for a few hours but It lacks the story to be fully engaged.

Easy to read and a classic for a reason. Parallels can be drawn still today in the political world, especially in heavily censored dictatorships, but the gaslighting has strong comparisons to modern western democracies. The book is quite predicatable though, you're never really surprised by what happens so it's not that exciting to read. Solid 4 star book, can't really fault it beyond the lack of plot twists or character development

This autobiography is one of the best I've read. Given it was finished only shortly before his death it is also arguably one of the most complete you will ever read. Nigels writing style is really easy to read and positive. Knowing him only from Yes Minister I expected a lot of the book to be about that part of his life however that barely takes a chapter, which in the end is a great thing. It shows yes minister was a relatively small part of his life and came late, what it does cover is the struggles of a gay man throughout the 20th century. A truly inspiring story and well worth a read

One of the best Sci fi books I've read. The concept is really strong and all the characters have a solid mix of flaws and iminspiring characteristics. The book works as a standalone novel which is good because they never published the 2nd installment. My edition has the first chapter of the never published 2nd book at the end which was a bit unfortunate as I read it before realizing that it was never finished. Well worth a read but go into it knowing you won't get to experience any more of this universe.

The final instalment of the trilogy is much closer to the brilliance of the first book than the 2nd. The world of the Mulefa is a really nice addition and very different to the rest of the universe. I wasn't a big fan of the prolonged ultimate battle which is why it's not 5 stars, but the supporting characters which are very diverse and enjoyable came back to give some more depth than just the 2 main protagonists.

As often is the case with trilogies the 2nd book is not as strong as the first. The continuation of the first book is strong and the parralel universe system is well done. It was missing my favourite characters from the first book and is much more focused on the adventures of the 2 main protagonists who I don't fully connect with. It's still good in its own right but for me it's not as strong as the first, hoping the 3rd installment is as good as the first but even if it's the same as this one I won't regret reading them.

I read this book with some hesitation as I wasn't sure it would be for me given the young adult target audience however I was pleasantly surprised. The world building was done really well as you discover the universe through experience than having it simply explained to you. I wasn't a massive fan of the main character but that didn't deminish the book as I really enjoyed a lot of the secondary characters which I always find is a sign of a good book. It ends on a cliffhanger so I'll be reading the next one immediately.

This black comedy is really enjoyable. Each chapter is only a few pages which I really like since I read in short spurts. The plot goes from strength to strength and the fake religion aspect is great fun. The only improvement I would like is essentially more book.
The book more or less ends when the world ends, a fun sequel of life after the freeze would be fun

2nd Read

On the second read I’m sticking with 4 stars. It’s still a great fun read and the short chapters really make it easy to get through. I think I appreciated some of the characters more on the second time through and although my desire for a sequel remains, I understand it would be beyond the purpose of the novel. The dark comedy is just brilliant, and I can’t praise that factor enough, when someone stands over a land covered with corpses dying of the plague and says to his son giggling “All this one day will be yours” you can’t help but love it. I really need to read the rest of Vonnegut’s work.

This book is very short but manages to cram a huge amount in. It has sometimes been classified as a long poem. If you like 1984 and We then you will like this book. The ending is much more inspiring than the others and the characters feel more believable. One of the best books I've read and I will read more of her works in the future. The rediscovery of science in a dystopian future adds an extra dimension.

This book is quite easy to read and all the characters are well formed and written. The 5 main characters are diverse and even the supporting characters seem to have some depth. I felt the book was a bit short however, where once the characters had been established and the plot started it ended quite abruptly with an ending which summarised the future of each of the characters in a then x happened kind of way. Would have loved another 100 pages of story and interaction. The chapters switching between each person is a nice touch and something I've come to enjoy in others of Couplands books
