3.25⭐️s rounded down for Goodreads
Spells, Strings, and Forgotten Things was cozy-adjacent, cute, and a bit spicey. I love a witchy read. We've got a Rivals to Lovers trope, a sister dynamic (is this where the trilogy comes in, following each sister?) that throws down fun nods to greek mythology. The memory magic felt original and was a favorite plot point for me, along with Lucien.
However, there were approximately 3 too many "Shadow Daddy" remarks for my taste (I have a delicate constitution when it comes to cringe nicknames, regardless of sarcasm😬). I also felt like there could have been more 'Show' versus 'Tell' when it came to the actiony bits.
Overall, I definitely had a good time and will continue with the series.
Thanks to NetGalley and Random House Publishing Group - Ballantine | Dell for the eARC!

I was fortunate enough to receive and devour an advanced audiobook narrated by Amara Jasper.
Once again, Barnes has delivered another bingeable, space, horror novel. Cold Eternity is a slow burn, psychological, scifi mystery. Barnes really knows how to mash up a medley of genres, flesh out her characters, and then dump them into eerily, isolated environments. Jasper embodied Halley in all her paranoia, creating a believably unsettled yet strong mc. With this combo, I was easily hooked. And no horror novel is complete without the creepy, gross, icky bits... and lest we forget the horrors of a political and tech driven climate that mirrors our own.

I read an e-ARC in tandem with an advanced audiobook.
Firstly, 5 Stars for that amazing cover! It's what drew me to this arc.
Secondly, Fog & Fireflies felt very unique. I really enjoyed the overall plot, the fog and monsters, the lore, the crucial roll of children, and the fear that comes with growing up. I was sucked in quickly. For me, it read lower YA/upper Middle Grade.
The pacing was a bit off for me. It slowed about 2/3 of the way through, then picked up again for the final act.
The audiobook is narrated by the author T.H. Lehnen, which I highly recommend. Lehnen has a melancholy, yet calming voice; perfect for the foggy and dreary setting and circumstances throughout Fog & Fireflies.
Thanks to NetGalley and Aspen and Thorn Press for an eARC and the audiobook!

I listened to an audiobook while occasionally reading along with a physical copy (I knew I would be wanting a shelf trophy). Esther Wane does a wonderful narration, bringing Luce and the world around her to life. Wane's voice is filled with emotion, and I hold her equally responsible (along with Woods) for the tears I shed.
Upon a Starlit Tide is a unique mash-up of historical fiction and tales like Cinderella and the Little Mermaid. The majority of it really feels original. Luce has family and friends who are fleshed out, lovable, and flawed creatures. The villains aren't as black and white as we might expect from a fairytale.
Kell Woods is an auto-buy author and quite possibly the Queen of fairytale retellings (as far as I'm concerned). I also loved her previous tale, After the Forest.

I have mixed but positive feelings about Water Moon. I think in part, because I was expecting a cozy tale (why, Im not sure). There are definitely cozy, wonderous descriptions throughout. However, there is also adventure, mystery, and love. Of which, i dont think any were fully explored? I still have a lot of questions regarding Hana's life. Overall, this tale seemed more centered on the environment/world/realm more so than the MCs, Hana and Keishin.
I'd love to see Water Moon adapted into film. As other reviews have stated, there are big Studio Ghibli vibes.
