This book was released in 2007 and I think its message of 'everyone is fighting their own demons' still rings true to this very day, especially with mental health discussion barely finding solid ground in the public eye. I've always loved Hopkins' poetry-style books and always think she does a good job with building the characters (and twists) with ease, and this one is no different. Excited to read 'Impulse's companion book 'Perfect' and will update rating accordingly.

I don't read too much true crime (the last one that I read was 'In Cold Blood' for a college class), but I really enjoyed how many different types of crimes were showcased in this compilation of stories. It's crazy to watch how small-town crime has evolved in a way (as there are many decades included), and it was interesting to read about how things can either quickly escalate or slowly burn. Some of the long-term crimes were actually quite impressive in terms of how they were constructed, and I give the author props for being able to research AND write a complete book in two years.

It's a little bit of a stretch on the 'magical realism' scale but I still absolutely enjoyed this book. With each part of the story, you're easily sucked into the world and mannerisms of that section's focus character while also smoothly transitioning into the next character's section. Each of the characters' lives is so utterly tragic, and if there's only one thing that you learn from reading this book it's that life is too short and there is no 'correct' way to live your life (even a long one).

I mean, they at least got to the sex earlier. But again, left on ANOTHER cliffhanger! These books are too damn short for cliffhangers dammit!

I absolutely ADORED this book! Olive is such a relatable character that it was super easy to put yourself in her shoes. Everything about the plot was on point. Definitely one of my new favorite books!

LOVED this book and want it to be turned into a movie or series! Great visuals and character development. A nice, surprising twist with another twist on top of it that makes you itch for the next book. A slow buildup of romance where it doesn't feel forced. Elsie is an absolute gem with many layers to her that make you feel like you become her or at least know someone in your life who is like her. Book 2 here I come!
