I love dysfunctional family stories and even more so when they revolve around the holidays since the tension is always skyrocketed. I thought this book did a great job hitting the comic and emotional aspects as well as creating smooth transitions between the past and present timeframes (which I personally found impressive for an audiobook). The constant bickering was a touch too much for my taste, but other than that I thought the characters and the overall story was great.

I was looking for a nice, lighthearted fall themed romance and this very much accomplished it. I wish it were longer, but I also understand since it revolves around the Thanksgiving holiday. I think there could have been one more round of editing, but otherwise I had a lot of fun with this.

Did I think this was a perfect plot? No, and I feel like I've seen a few movies that do this same thing. BUT, I will say that I can see how people can get hooked by Hoover's writing because I found myself really wanting to just drop everything to read this book. If I had a day to do absolutely nothing, I 1000% would've devoured this in one go.

I think everyone should read this book if not to work through your own personal experiences, but to also be able to help someone who may be experiencing something similar to any other the stories being shared in this book. I also appreciate that Cheryl addresses everyone's request for advice from a neutral place and not from a preachy stance. While listening to this, I felt relieved to know that I am not alone in my experiences and emotions, and this will absolutely be one of my comfort books.

This is realistically a 4.5/5 star rating.

I think that the format of somewhat having a children’s book style (sadly) really helps with making the subject matter pack a punch when you read through it. I think that the use of black and white illustrations with the pop of red stood out in a meaningful way without taking away from the dark subject matter that the art was embodying. My only criticism is that I think that this had the potential to be a longer illustrated book, but I also understand that the focus was using the author’s actual letter as the story itself.

I wasn't sure how I felt about the format of this when I first started reading it, but overall I ended up having a lot of fun with the story itself. It's clear that this was written from the mindset of hardcore horror fan, and there were definitely certain characteristics that I recognized from some of my fave horror flicks. 

I like that there are more fiction stories revolving around the different ways that people process grief, and I enjoyed the fact that this story in particular focused on grief that hits heavy during holidays. In an overall sense, I thought the timeframe of the plot was thought out perfectly where I didn't feel like I was missing anything. In a character sense, I felt like our lead was slightly neurotic in some of her mannerisms and reactions. But again, being able to see multiple perspectives on grief outways any annoyance I had towards her and I felt myself listening from a place of understanding.

This one is a doozy. Super informative regarding everything with Standing Rock, while also extremely disheartening regarding how fucked up the American government is. The only reason why this isn’t a 5 star rating for me personally is because I feel like it would have been a really dry read in tangible form, but as an audiobook I felt like I was listening to a podcast. 

As a whole, I think having this collection is a breath of fresh air by giving indigenous voices a chance to share stories in the fantasy/sci-fi realm. I’m relatively hit or miss on sci-fi and fantasy in general, so I did have the same opinions that I normally do when I feel like something is just ‘ok.’ However, the stories I did enjoy I REALLY enjoyed and absolutely wanted more. Overall, this is a nice lighthearted collection of stories that share love in many different definitions of the word and would recommend for anyone looking to diversify their reading. 

When I first picked up this collection, I was prepared for young adult antics, especially with a plot that revolves around a girl turning into the girl she likes’ dream boy. However, I was pleasantly surprised with the depth and courage to discuss hot button topics that this country (the United States) faces on a daily basis while also making it digestible enough for any level of reader. I think its story is perfect for fans of X-Men, strong female-led comics, and stories that discuss politics, and is very much one that I will be on my recommendation list.
