My faith in manga is entirely restored. The story is gripping, the art is beautiful. I adore the new anime that has been made of this recently, but the amount of depth and emotion in these pages makes it a very close competition, dareisay better?? It almost hurts to say, I’m confident to state that devilman crybaby to me has become instantly one of the best anime I have ever seen, or at very least places in the top three. It’s hard to tell, at this point I know where the story will go so I’m reading this with a very specific lens. Regardless, comparing its other versions and adaptations or viewing it as a standalone, this manga is very, very good. Can’t wait for the rerelease to keep it in paper copy forever ❤️

Simply stunning once more. the final image is completely compelling to look at, and indeed many other pages are. At times I spent minutes looking at a single image. It is so nice to see that it’s recent adaptation didn’t copy the source material word for word, devilman crybaby is very much recontextualised. But I’m glad that both stand on their own level of high merit and one hasn’t made me resent the other. I also feel like many of the characters are far more aggressive in this. I’m not mad, it’s interesting to see the different interpretations of their personalities. Akira at present is far more angsty and bloodlusty in this and it is highly intriguing.

Also I am very shocked that the sexual part between Silen and Amon was not part of the original concept!! It truly felt like it was, so top job to the creators on that! Their whole dynamic was a little altered and I loved it!! Made me feel a bit more heartbroken for the poor gal.

Just putting it out there ryo is beautiful.
Also everything about miko in this threw me off guard.

I am filled with utter sadness but I’m glad that it’s canon that ryo is bisexual. Miko shone in this, love her to pieces. Also I loved how the big reveal was handled, it was far more built up and you got to learn a lot more about ryo and the story through his perspective. Downside: some of the characters were not as developed, and I sorely missed miko’s presence throughout this.
adventurous challenging tense fast-paced

L m a o can't believe I used my own free will to reread this

Oh man. I wish I liked this more, but... I don’t.

I know that I’m not a fan with manga anyways, but I wasn’t a big fan of the art style change. Am I really going to say it was too graphic? Not like me, could just be the art style.

The premise is quite funny and quirky, but I don’t think it pays off. I’m aware this franchise has a lot of coals in the mine, and I’m beginning to understand that there’s no version quite like the original. Guess it’s worth a read if you want to get familiar with the entire go nagai world however.

the comic is officially completed and I thought I would add some summarising thoughts *sob*. I quite often review comics when I've read a substantial amount, as they can continue for years! sadly this one has only a run of 30 issues. this is most likely an issue with lezhin being the shitty publisher they are known to be and not supporting the artist well yet again. wont rant about that here but I do think that this by far could have had a longer run, and its early demise is very much a shame.

the art was adorable and the characters so funny and sweet. sagold did manage to round it up well in the end but I'm sure they find the rushed ending as sad as I do. I will certainly keep an eye out for sagold in the future, if not some earlier works?? but yes, this is great. a little bit silly at times but very cute and yay consensual and healthy relationships are portrayed how lovellyyyy <3

at 4 am I made some holy decision to read this, and then ended up reading it all.
was gonna stop reading if it got weird but it was actually way sweeter than I thought it would be.
the characters were so cute and I shipped everything
and the art is 100%
im probably a fujoshi now rip (still in denial)
but seriously again I feel like korean comics do a lot better with portraying relationships than Japanese ones??? is that a thing???

edit: changed to one star because the more I think about this the more I hate it. even the translator is so done and rants about how ridiculous the story is and how disgusting the characters are.

Recommended for: lonely nerdy boys who do not understand anything about women at all.

Came here for a romance story and honestly feel so attacked right now. its so uncommon to read a manhwa and read exactly what you expect, but this.... this was so trashy and gross and not in a good way. Didn’t really like the art, and not even the superhero formula was enough to save it. This whole comic is just too much and I want to cringe quite honestly.

So apparently I started reading this in September last year, and only finished it today. doesn't even matter, this book was absolutely fantastic in so many ways. Although a somewhat linear biography, it is easy to either read a chapter and put down for a while, or just binge a whole chunk of it at once. I probably did the latter, can't say I read it much but when I did I was reading it for hours.

Doughty has an amazing narrative voice. She's a bizarre and rare species of american that has mastered the classic dark and morbid British sense of humour, and I love her for that. I have read similar books previously by Americans (see: Stiff: the curious lives of human cadavers) and it really didn't come across to me the same. it is overall a very funny but touching account of how one woman has made her way through the death industry while trying to answer her own questions about death and how others view it as well.

If I was a teacher, I would honestly enforce this into curriculum. everyone should read this book at some point in their lives. seriously. Although it is clear that doughty has her own very clear views (which I ABSOLUTELY agree with), I probably imagine not everyone will feel the same. this isn't a criticism obviously because It raises this point: regardless of your views on things such as death, its better to form an opinion and an understanding than none at all. and that book really suggests this. like sex or whatever, we need to be more aware of how it works and let our loved ones know what we want from them when we die. kind of morbid but that's the truth.

I could honestly write an essay on this book. there is lots of useful ACADEMIC information (which is fully referenced btw thanks) but it is also extremely accessible considering the nature of the topic. top marks for me.

If they ever let us get thrown in the woods I'll see you there caitlin.
