More of a reference than an actual book to read cover to cover

Tends to be a bit of a slog. Will try again in audiobook format.

Thought it was getting good around my third attempt to sit through this, but I can’t deal with it. Unironic Starship Troopers fanfiction and a military soap opera lacking the charm of something like Metal Gear Solid.

Thieves' World

Poul Anderson, Christine DeWees, John Brunner, Marion Zimmer Bradley, Andrew J. Offutt, Lynn Abbey, Robert Lynn Asprin, Joe Haldeman

This is my third time trying this, and the reader does a decent job, but the names are unique to the setting and intentionally off. This doesn't really flow well in the audio format, and I'd prefer a print edition. I have the First Blood omnibus I bought off iTunes; I'll be giving that a shot.

Boring. Had none of the fun of 48 Laws.

This book was so bad that it made me quit Goodreads.

The idea that I had a choice between this shitty, obnoxious millenial protagonist and 99 books of blatant hardcore porn masquerading as literature (which let's face it, this would have gotten there eventually) was the straw that broke the camel's back.

So hilariously enough, this book improved my life and overall reading experience. Glad to be here!

I'll tackle this thick-ass bible some other time. It was charming for the parts I read. I'm just daunted by the size at this time...

Hell's Angels: A Strange and Terrible Saga

Hunter S. Thompson

I was drawn on by the mystery that surrounds Hunter S. Thompson as a character unto himself; yes, he's a cool guy and he does all the drugs, but God is he a difficult narrator to follow. His exoneration of the Hell's Angels lies in the difficult-to-get-behind defense of their alleged rape, which in some sentences he contradicts and admits they're capable of, is centered in a conviction that he knows the media and they simply overhyped what is just an apparently upstanding motorcycle gang. The schizophrenic bouncing from one idea to another is very Bohemian, sure, but it means ideas aren't followed to any particular conclusion. Characters inspired by Hunter S. Thompson might be more compelling to me, i dunno. Spider Jerusalem, Johnny Depp's acting as the guy, etc...
