”Dangerous is walking too close behind a skittish horse. Dangerous is going anywhere in this city at night. Dangerous is not helping someone stay safe.”
4.5 stars!! I really loved this one. It reminded me a lot of Stain by AG Howard, another retelling that I recently enjoyed. The writing, characters and world building all have a sort of magical charm to them that makes me really happy. I had no prior knowledge of the Goose Girl fairytale, but that definitely didn’t affect my enjoyment!
I loved Alyrra SO MUCH. Her personality is just a delight to read about and you can tell that her heart is pure and good. She has a tough go of it throughout this book but you always know that whatever she does, it’ll be inspiring and well-intentioned. I really loved how the darkness of her story was handled; there’s some great messages throughout about abuse and the victim’s relationship to it, and I thought it was perfectly interwoven into the fairytale-esque world.
The other characters were great as well! Krestin was an AMAZING love interest and I adored how his and Alyrra’s relationship was written. It was really a struggle to get there, and full of twists and turns but it felt really deserved at the end and I’m very happy with how they ended up. The found family aspect of the other workers at the stables was GREAAAAAAT! LOVE THAT JOURNEY FOR ME. It was so nice to see Alyrra in a familial, caring group of people. I also really loved her relationship with Red Hawk and his gang! Would 100% read a sequel about all of them making the kingdom a better place. Also, FALADA!!! LOVED HIM!
The only pitfalls I had with this was that some of the magical worldbuilding confused me a bit. I don’t really understand magic’s place within the world and the introduction of the Fae seemed less fleshed out. But otherwise, I totally loved this book!
TW: abuse, rape, murder, animal death

MAN. SOOOOO CUTE. Tears are still falling from my eyes as I type this, this was soooooo much fun!
It starts a bit slow; I didn’t immediately warm up to Karthik and Meghna as a couple (they are awkward at first, but that’s kind of the point, I guess). But once they got rolling, WHOO. LOVED THEM.
I had a great time reading this— it was dramatic, laugh out loud funny, steamy, heart wrenching, so many good things. I even enjoyed it through the third act breakup and miscommunication troubles, which is a FEAT that I must rave about. The ending absolutely made me cry, it was so stinking adorable! Will definitely try out more books from this author!

YESSSSSSSSSS EVERYONE SAY THANK YOU LIVY HART!!!!!!!
This was incredible and 100000% my favorite Livy Hart book. ALEX CONROY LEGENDARY LOVE INTEREST STATUS. I LOVE THAT MAN. This was laugh out loud funny and tooth-achingly sweet and perfectly steamy and UGH. Greatness.
Alex and Mia were so much fun. I loved every moment—from their brutally awkward first date to their gritted-teeth chance encounters until they finally started to warm up to each other. They were so sweet together. Alex had me in the palm of his hand, he is SUCH a great guy and it was so nice to see him be so open and in love with Mia. WHERE’S MY ALEX CONROY
I normally wouldn’t be into the “dating my dad’s boss” trope but I took a chance since it was Livy and I’ve enjoyed her previous books and I’m SO GLAD. I loved how that conflict was handled both between Alex & Mia and Mia & her dad. LET’S ALLLLLLL CHEER FOR NO THIRD ACT BREAKUP WAHOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!
Seriously, so much fun! I will definitely be buying a copy of this one.

*SHAKES FIST AT PAST SELF*
This book was truly just another instance of me trying to read it at the wrong time. When I first tried it, the beginning failed to grab me so I decided to put it aside. But I recently got motivation to try it out again and BOY, what a wonderful experience.
I loved this so much! The further I got, the more mad I got at my past self for putting this aside for so long. The one upside is I don’t have to wait quite as long for the sequel, which I’m already dying to have in my hands. I have so much fun with Chakraborty’s writing and her characters are fresh and interesting. Her worldbuilding is impeccable as always. I loved Amina and her crew and am so looking forward to more adventures with them on the Marawati!

OH MYYYYYYY. I was enraptured by this beautiful cover and THE BOOK DELIVERED. This was great!
I read nearly 80% in one sitting before I had to force myself to sleep because it was 1:30 AM. Mulan retelling with extra feminist aspects PLUS spirit magic and a mysterious dragon speaking in your ear AND romance AND political intrigue ANDDDDD morally grey goodness? Yes pls thx
I loved Meilin and her unapologetic ambition, we support women’s wrongs! All of the characters were so interesting and multi-faceted, I could never guess their intentions which was stressful but thrilling. There were so many good twists, I just couldn’t stop reading, and every time I started to question a plot decision I was immediately proven wrong. NOICE.
The romance (PLURAL???) was fantastic. I loved Ren and Sky’s relationship and was having a great time with them until [REDACTED] showed up and I was like HUHHHHHHHH and I am SO INTRIGUED by him and really looking forward to seeing what happens in the sequel!
I did find the ending a teeeeny bit unsatisfying. I thought the spirit magic throughout was a little confusing and there’s a lot of unanswered questions there.
EDIT: ok ngl I lowered my rating bc I just tried to write a recap and truly could not remember or explain the plot or worldbuilding. Like idk wtf Lei was doing for this entire book, truly couldn’t tell you what the war was about. LMAO but still had a fun time while reading so
