Reread 2022: 4.5 stars. Rachel Dare was a bit too small of a hint. I know she returns but her appearance was too minor. I thought this book was a bit more focused than book 2, but still doesn’t beat book 1.

A lot of introspection without a whole lot of action. I absolutely love the premise though. And the writing was fantastic. Brava.

Strongly believe that I will have a different opinion of this book than I did 8 years ago. Strongly believe it will be a diminished one. But I have to know....
Ok, finished. Definitely wasn't as enthralled as I was the first time I read it, but it got better as it went along. The ending is so cliffhanger, I'm rather disappointed that the rest of the series isn't from the same point of view.
Overall, it's a well thought out book about a hidden book. Dalkey takes what could be a very cliche idea and turns it into something original, which is great.

Interesting read. Very original. Definitely recommended for high school kids. I feel like focusing on one character more would have been nice, because I feel like I didn't really get to know any of them very well. Other than that, very action packed, never dull.

Second read 2022: 4.5 stars. Didn't love as much as the first, but still so fun to read. And fast! This whole series makes for such a wonderful introduction to reading fantasy and series in middle school, and sets up for a lifetime love of reading.

Re-read in 2022 - 5 stars. Such a fun ride with silly moments, action, and relatable characters. I think when I read it at 20 years old I was too close still to middle school to appreciate how great of a middle grade book this is.
