I should start this off by saying that I have been looking forward to reading this book since quite a while and now I finally got the change to! Needless to say that I had very high expectations for it.

The big mystery of Etiquette & Espionage, the super-secret missing prototype, wasn't of much interest to me because and it even was a bit boring. But it served well to portrait Sophronias main antagonist and give the book an overall frame. What kept the story gripping and exciting were definitely the classes at the Finishing school and, the same as in Gail Carrigers other series, the characters!

Sophronia Angelina Temminnick, as her full name is, is brought to the Finishing School as a covert recruit. She's from a rather conservative family from the countryside who hasn't really heard much but tales about werewolves and vampires and who doesn't know about the true purpose of the school aforehand.

Then there is her new best friend Dimity, who is absolutely adorable and faints at the first sign of blood. She also has a taste for extravagant colours and clothing (does this remind you of a certain someone with a feverish love for hats?)

I literally squeed when Lady Kingair, or Sidheag as she is commonly refered to, appeared! I wasn't expecting her to attend this school so this was a really pleasant surprise. The same goes for the appearance of Beatrice Lefoux and later the nine-year-old Genevieve! Genevieve was one of my favourite Parasol Protectorate characters and her younger self is as much fun as her older one!
It was my dearest hope from the very start that we would meet some of the Parasol Protectorate characters and I wasn't disappointed!

On the topic of not being disappointed: This book was absolutely up to my expectations which I set very high, knowing how perfectly stunning I found the other novels by Gail Carriger.
There isn't much focus on the supernatural set in Etiquette & Espionage opposed to The Parasol Protectorate but this was to be expected since they aren't really the focus of the story.
Of the new characters I was most intriguied by Professor Braithwope and I'd like to know more about the rove vampire. Additionally I really enjoyed his few interactions with Sophronia.

I loved the sense of fresh air and curiosity you get from Sophronia. She's a very adventurous young woman who loves to get herself into deep trouble.

I'm very excited to see where this will lead her in the second installment Courtsies & Conspiracies which I will most certainly read!

If you've read The Parasol Proctectorate series and enjoyed it I highly encourage you to give this book a try! I also recommend it to whose who enjoy boarding school stories with a very spirited protagonist!
