first book i ever read!

one of my favorites when i was younger! i think i first heard of it when i went to see a talk about harriet the spy (one of my favorite books at the time) and kirsten miller was there, along with some other authors i liked. i always wanted to discover a shadow city.

not the best written book and i haven't reread it since i actually developed taste, but damn middle school me was obsessed with this book so it deserves 5 stars for that alone

i borrowed this book from my sixth grade teacher and never gave it back. she said it reminded her of studio ghibli and i don't remember enough about the book to say for certain

i must've read this book 20 times when i was younger

such a fever dream of a book. it took me a while to get into (i think a bit before the halfway mark) since i was really looking forward to the real horror elements and in the beginning they were few and far between. there's so much going on in this book, dealing with themes of isolation, sexuality, mental illness, it was all so fascinating even if it was confusing at times. the writing style was really beautiful, although sometimes it felt like it was a bit much and i was somewhat disoriented. i also related to eleanor possibly a bit too much. you can totally see shirley jackon's influence, and i now understand why she's such a titan of the genre. i'm glad i finally got around to reading this :)
