An emotional and poignant contemporary about change and mental illness. A real must-read for middle graders readers, but a tad too repetitive for my personal taste.

Reread #1 (Jun 2018) - ★★★★★
We know this story isn't true but it is truth
I had zero idea how much this series would come to mean to me.
Original Read (Oct 2016) - ★★★★☆
There are some books that you just cannot put into words and I think that Every Heart a Doorway is definitely that book. I just… this was so different to anything I had ever read before I don’t even know where to begin. This book is incredibly diverse - with an asexual protagonist! - and it was incredibly well-written. The atmosphere was so magical, so captivating, yet it was also strangely brutal and tragic. I have no idea how this author managed to weave together this peculiar but alluring world but she did, seemingly with effortless grace.
The characters were wonderful. I adored them all, especially Nancy, Jack, and Kade. The lack of romance was perfect. The mystery was intriguing. There was nothing I didn’t enjoy about this book. If I was being greedy, I would ask for more of Eleanor’s backstory and just a longer story in general. But that’s me being picky. I wish could reread it with fresh eyes already.
Oh, and if you’re interested, the audiobook was brilliant. The narrator did an incredible job!
