Sadly, this just isn't working for me.
I have 10 chapters left and I'm not invested enough to continue.
The writing is absolutely lovely, as is the setting. But the magic system is too vague, with little to no science or rules behind it. It's basically all vibes for me at this point, and unfortunately, that isn't enough for me to want to keep reading.
I will say, though, that if you plan to pick this up: pair it with the Maleficent OST. It really heightens the reading experience.

230 pages in and I'm still not really invested in the characters. Also, maybe Viking stories aren't really my thing?
I was really looking forward to this book. Maybe I'll come back to it later, but it's not doing much for me right now.

It’s a real shame considering this was among my most anticipated reads for the year, but the writing style just isn’t vibing with me and I can’t seem to push myself to read further.
I also can’t help (constantly) feeling that this would make a much better comic book than it would a novel.
Will try again later.

Everything about this is absolutely great, except that I went into it without paying attention to the content warnings.
It's got an excellent premise, wonderful writing, eloquent exploration of capitalism, class and power struggles, and honestly everything I normally gravitate towards. But it's a bit heavy on the domestic abuse and toxic relationship front, so be prepared for that going in.
I hope to be able to pick this up again sometime in the future.

This is great! I just feel like I'm not in the right mood for it.
I wanted to like this one, I really did. It came heavily recommended and had all the ingredients I normally gravitate towards, but:
- It's written in first-person multiple POV which, if I'm not immediately drawn in to by the character's voice, I tend to find quite distracting.
- Stuck with it anyway and got about halfway through when I realised I still wasn't particularly invested in any of the characters
- Too many rape threats and sexism sprinkled into casual conversation made this intensely uncomfortable to read
- Not a fan of how little agency the women in this have, at least from the 51% I've read. I'm hoping it gets better, but I'm not willing to stick around to see if it does
- I found the world-building and plot flimsy at best. The stakes and consequences seem to all be a product of the characters decisions, and not the setting. And since I don't find the characters engaging, it didn't make sense for me to continue 🤷🏽♀️
