While I was wildly entertained throughout most of this book, I felt so letdown by the “hehe whoops, just needed to do a summer of sugaring to build my confidence, off to do photography now! 🤪✌🏼” tone of the ending.
From the synopsis I thought I would be getting a bit more substance from this, but any sort of intersectionality is so shallow, it’s laughable. A quick read on audio, definitely recommend it in this format if you pick it up.

Adding this to my list of favorite memoirs. Karen is a very thoughtful writer and I loved her insights. There are so many poignant lines and observations, I wish I had a physical copy to tab and annotate! But wonderful as an audiobook, Karen does a great job reading it herself.

Not me crying over a book again 🥲 I will forgive that third act breakup only because I could truly understand the fear underlining that decision.
This friends-to-lovers story swept me away and I am so in love with love after reading Ni and Isaac’s story! The warmth and deep care that underlined their interactions made me feel so many things. The chemistry of a lifelong friendship is just unmatched, and watching them shift to a romantic relationship was beautiful.
I also really appreciate Riss’s incorporation of medical negligence and how women of color are statistically misdiagnosed and experience a higher rate of delayed diagnosis. That aspect added a gravity to this romance that reminds me Tia William’s Seven Days in June.
I was lucky enough to receive an arc for this and there are a few mistakes I caught that I’m certain will be fixed for its pub date. But overall, a new favorite romance for me and I hope Riss writes more in this genre!!

To be fair, I also really dislike this narrator, so experiencing this entire novella on audio didn’t do it any favors.

I listened to this on audio and highly recommend it! This truly nailed the balance between dark and comedic for me, and the narrator carried that tone effortlessly.
While there is a wry, humorous tone in this book, there are also some intense scenes of physical abuse, SA, and emotional manipulation. So do not go into this expecting a funny, lighthearted time.
But I loved this messy group of frenemies and how they grow closer throughout the book. What started with blackmail and extortion ended with genuinely wanting to help each other get away with murder. A classic tale of friendship!

It’s this book’s misfortune to have been picked up during a reading slump, but I finally finished it! And for the most part, I had a good time! That ending though, ugh 🥲❤️🩹
Definitely a book that would translate well to a kdrama, the vibes feel very similar.

Perhaps this would've hit better if I hadn't just read one of the best graphic novels this year. But it was still a solid read, full of short, cute stories and queer reimaginings of familiar and new tales alike! I especially enjoyed the last one - why insist on a transaction when you've been given a gift?
The art style wasn't my favorite, but still a cute, quick read.

THIS BOOK!!! Ahhhh, I loved it so much. The art style, the story, the characters...everything was perfection. Juliet's journey learning more about her queerness, finding her community, and learning to decenter white women in her learning was done so well. It was especially gratifying to me to read a graphic novel that highlights how white women can be especially egregious at continuing to center themselves. Especially in places of learning!
Anyway, I just realized there is a full length novel of this story too? I will definitely be checking that out!

This may be a format issue for me, so if I continue with this series it will be on print. The audiobook experience was lacking and I found myself either bored or confused through most of this.
