It kinda creeped me out but at the same time I wanted my parents to read it for me when I was a kid...
I don’t ship it.
Nope.
Never.
I normally rate the books in this series 4 stars (5 stars for the first book tho), but this one doesn’t deserve more than 3, seriously.
And that’s mainly because of the shipping that’s sailed.
{A little spoiler warning}
It was pretty obvious that it would happen, but seriously, there was this tiny bit inside of me, that hoped for someone reasonable enough, who wouldn’t let this ship sail. It’s gross enough for me to think, that those two are even shipped, anyway.
It’s practically incest, even if they’re not blood related, but still.
Gin and Finn are like brother and sister for me, Gin mentions it more than enough that he’s like a brother for her, just as much as Fletcher was a father for her. Would you ship Gin and Finn? Probably not. And even though they did have a one night stand — they were young back then. Teenagers, nothing more. Puberty makes you do things.
But Finn now is above 30 and even though sex is for him like bread and water, and like most men he cannot think of something else than sex, he should know better. Bria is blood-related to Gin. That’s incest, even if it’s not by blood, but as long as you see someone as your sibling, that does not matter.
Sure, Finn and Bria don’t see each other as siblings, and the kiss in book 4 pretty much proofed that, but still.
I. Don’t. Ship. It.
I really loved Bria the first time she was introduced and I hope her taste in men doesn’t ruin that for me. In my opinion, she deserves better. Finn is not relationship material and even if he ends up with that typical drastic character development because he fell in love, this is wrong.
I would love to give this book 4 stars, but again, there are too many things that kept me from doing so.
Because of that gross ship the ranking already dropped to 3 stars for me, however, there are always things that manage to satisfy me enough to give it 4 stars, as for all the previous books.
Most reasons are the deveroux sisters, Jo-Jo and Sophia. Sophia especially. I want to know more about her and that’s what mostly keeps me active in buying these books. But also all the other background characters, and Bria (until she decided to sleep with Finn ofc).
Yet, things like the author’s constantly repeating of incidents that have happened, not only in previous books but also of previous chapters in the same book, are pretty annoying. I do not suffer from amnesia and if I did, I probably wouldn’t be reading a book series. Maybe she does, but then again, aren’t these books read by professional editors to proofread before it’s being published?
I hope the next book doesn’t disappoint me as much, mainly talking about that one “ship”.
I do like however the references to her other books.
- some random woman at a mask-ball dressed herself up as karma girl (a character from her superhero series)
- the hut Gin and her friends were staying in is owned by a man named Nick. A. Medes on paper (in her Mythos Academy series there was a character named nickamedes)
Also, Mab Monroe was a really good villain. I also liked her character since the first book, even if sometimes she was annoying. But, I mean, which character isn’t annoying sometimes, right? I hope we’ll hear from her soon again, even if it’s not going to be in the present. But maybe about her past or something.
She was too good for a character to just die and never hear from again.
