While I normally enjoy the required reading for English class, I loathed every second of this one. I purchased it as I do with most required reading, so I could annotate as we read. In hindsight, I consider it a waste of a purchase to be perfectly honest.
I was excited at the prospect of this book. It was explained to us as an exploration of Western colonization's effect on African society, but I was severely disappointed. The Westerners don't even show up until the very end of the book. This resulted in a meandering plot with seemingly no drive. If it wasn't required I would have likely put it to the side.
In fact, most of the story is the main character's fragile masculinity and flimsy excuses for the horrific things he does to cover this up, such as beating his wife and children. Frequently. This was, naturally, very difficult to read. Especially without warning.
