i definitely felt there were a few instances of American exceptionalism or at least America-centric thinking by the authors but on the whole I would recommend this book. it's a great overview of how first the internet and then social media developed and how they're effecting everything from interpersonal relationships to the democratic process to terrorism. it's fairly accessible writing and definitely not uninteresting, both of which help with ease of reading (i know both can make or break non-fiction even when one values a book's subject).

i really loved this whole collection. i don't think i've ever read anything by octavia butler and i can't believe what i've been missing! i already have her xenogenosis series and plan to read as much of her work as i can get.

although the author certainly has her biases (which i'm sure have been pointed out many times since the original publishing and which i would hope she has made efforts to confront) i think overall it's a useful and generally well-written book. i can certainly understand why i've seen it on the book list for so many into to sociology courses.
