I really wanted to love this more than I did! I think I'll go back to it in future and try it again, it felt like one of those books that I'll grow to appreciate.

Even if the content of the novel didn't work for me, it wasn't difficult to see just how beautifully it was written. Some of the lines or paragraphs really jumped out to me so I've written them out. The book as a whole was a poignant look at first love, self discovery, and the relationships we have with our family's history.

This feels like Silvera has taken the dystopian/fantasy aspects of his other novels and really built upon them. Our protagonist is your generic Silvera character- lovable, Latino, and really just trying his best. I find that Silvera's books are never quite five star reads for me, but I'm always confident that I'll enjoy them: an auto-read author.

I thought the whole concept of this novel combined well-loved tropes with totally new ideas which was so refreshing. We had your traditional idea of 'super heroes in New York' and that got put with 'generational powers/dragons/reincarnation'. Looking forward to the sequel!

Such a cute story- perhaps for younger teenagers. The characters were so cute and Alex was really likable- I felt properly invested in her struggles and story line.

I absolutely loved the bruja magic that infused this book and will never get enough of reading stories filled with such beautiful cultures. Will hopefully read the others in the series!

Beautifully written but not quite for me. I think my tastes are beginning to shift away from heavy fantasy. However, it's impossible to deny how much care and attention to detail this book is filled with. I fully believed in the struggle of this kingdom and the deep, difficult history that it was steeped in.

So much drama and sacrifice and betrayal- I was at the edge of my seat!

A lot of reviews I've read for this book are quite negative and absolutely everyone is entitles to their own opinion, but for me- this book was just amazing!

I loved the weirdness that ran all the way through, from the dodgy characters to the personification of evil house. At one point, towards the start, the book talks about how evil the house was and the sentence was so chilling that I had to stop for a second and read it to the person next to me. I'm also a huge fan of unreliable narrators so this book was brilliant!

I'm desperate to read more Shirley Jackson now, particularly We Have Always Lived In The Castle.

Such an important book but a difficult read if you don't have any background knowledge (which I didn't). But after reading it, I feel like I've learnt a lot and am encouraged to search out more indigenous literature.

A really cute story- I'm all for friendly ghosts!!

Art style wasn't my favourite but it grew on me :)

Another book with an unreliable narrator! (By far my fave trope at this point) Such a strange book with intense trigger warnings for disordered eating. By the time I'd finished I wasn't really sure what to think. I know there was a theme of racism running under the central plot but I'm still not 100% how it fit with the rest of the story.

Perhaps I need to re-read it another time to understand it more? Not sure.

An adorable story with lgbtq+rep- can't wait to read the next few! <3

Much preferred this one to the first one! The world building is magnificent and the characters are just getting better and better. The slow burn romance is killing me (in a good way) and Rhy is too precious, I just want to protect him (Though I suppose that's Kell's job)

That cliffhanger though!! I need the last one immediately.
