I think I went in to this book expecting something very different- I’d seen it compared to The Fascinators which I loved.

I think people are either going to love or hate this book and I don’t want to critique it too much based on my own opinions because it’s fantastic that this book has so much representation.

For me, our MC was self-absorbed and the way he treated his romantic relationships did not work for me. I was looking for a sweet contemporary YA romance which is not what this was- it was quite difficult to read at points for example when he describes feeling physically repulsed by his own boyfriend.

Guess not every book is going to work for me and I’m sure some people will love it- just not one I enjoyed.

A very powerful story that has clearly come from the author’s heart. All themes/topics covered were ones I know very little about so I couldn’t say how well they were written (eg civil war, albinism)

Found parts towards the end graphic and unpleasant to read but that was clearly the desired effect. Highly emotional and thought provoking surrounding racism, colonialism, and missionary work.

First book I’ve read with a main character that has bipolar disorder. It’s something that I know very little about so couldn’t and wouldn’t judge how well it was written but I’m glad that representation exists!

I loved the characters in this and how vivid they were- each character at the old persons’ home had so much personality and I really felt like I knew everyone well.

The pinnacle moment of the book had me crying and the raw emotion felt by the Mc was powerful to read. Despite this, I felt that the relationship with her deceased brother was not delved into as much as it could’ve been but I suppose you could say that it was left as it was to show her moving on.

To my knowledge, this book isn’t own voices rep.

This started out really promising and I loved the setting- drizzly grey island full of weird and wonderful creatures.

Ultimately, the story and relationships didn’t capture me which was a shame. I didn’t feel for either of the love interests despite the ‘doomed love story’ vibes. My favourite part was the pure bizarre nature of a girl turning to glass- I’ve never read something even remotely close to this idea!

Loved this! I’d say imagine Love, Simon but in rural (ish) America and with MAGIC! It’s a great combination

A very powerful story and quite difficult to read. It’s agonising to feel Kambili’s suffering but for to not realise that what she’s experiencing is not normal.

Her connection with her Aunt and cousins was written so well and every time a crack appeared in Kambili’s armour, it felt like a little gem scattered into the story.

LOVED THIS. This will definitely be one of the books I recommend to everyone this year!

Gorgeous world building and the setting of the magic tea rooms was beautiful. The relationship between Tea and her brother Fox was written in such a sweet way and I can’t wait to read more of him being a protective (dead) older brother.

The idea of having a ‘hearts glass’ was so interesting and the whole way through I kept getting distracted by wondering what mind would look like.

Also got 3/4 through and realised her name is said “Tee-uh” not Tea like the drink. Oops.

Preferred this to the first one!

Such a passionate, powerful book! Again, not my genre but still enjoyed it a lot.

Personally wish there had been more time spent on relationships rather than everyone hate each other but it was definitely more of a ‘fighting a magic war’ book than a ‘happy couples’ one

I wanted to give this four stars because I liked the protagonist so much but I didn’t enjoy the story enough for that. Finley was a great character- and I thought the whole plot of her tattooing the spirits she sees was really cool!

For me, the rest of the characters were a bit flat. I wasn’t emotionally attached to any of them apart from maybe Abbey. It’s been a while since I’ve read any paranormal thrillers so it was fun to see how the ‘paranormal aspect’ played out but it also didn’t feel essential to the plot.

My favourite book out of the three. In this one, I felt I was given a much deeper sense of how this world functioned which to me was super interesting!
I thought that the ending was a little flat after so much drama but I’m also glad that they ended it where they did (without giving any spoilers). This book also had some happy spots! Unlike the other two, there were parts of this book where I was rooting for the characters.
