This book is a memoir of Jen; a woman who falls in love, gets married and has a child with her husband Marco only to find out that he is just an illusion.

I liked the writing style of this book and how the chapters went back and forth between "before" and "after" Jen found the emails that sparked everything. 

This book is about Mexican immigrant children, their journey to America and their process to become "legal". This book is written through the lens of the author who is a Mexican interpreter for the children. I thought it was really creative how the book was written based on the questions on the questionnaire that the children would have to answer during an evaluation on if they could stay in America or not. I liked that the book was written in plain words making it easier to read and digest.

I read this in a book club and I'm glad I did so in a group setting. As a group we were able to talk through our emotions and thoughts which were all heavy. I felt like I left more informed on what happens with Mexican immigrant children during their journey to America and all that they go through once they are here.

 I feel that the author did a great job at making a complex concept simple to read and understand. I wish that I read this book sooner and I'm sure that I will reread it many more times in the future.

Their Eyes Were Watching God follows the life of a woman named Janie who went through 3 husbands, love, loss and personal growth. Some of the  themes of this book included love (for self and with others), gender roles, racism, happiness, colorism, black communities, struggle and the list could go on and on! I love Zora's writing style and it reminds me of my southern family. 

Even though this book had many emotional themes, I did get inspired by the main character Janie. I love Janie's fearlessness about her desires out of life. My main take away from this book was to live life to its fullest! Don't let age, economic struggles or other people's  opinions stop you!

For me, this book was filled with affirmations of how a woman can live more fulfilled in all aspects of her life based on biblical teachings. The storytelling throughout the book made it personable. I also really enjoyed the recaps and reflection at the end of each chapter. This book was exactly what I needed and I know that I will refer back to it often!
