I don’t think I’ll ever have enough words to express how much I love this manga and anime series but I’ll try anyway. But I just need to make it known that this has changed my view in anime and manga forever. I caught up with this manga in the last 30 or so chapters but I won’t say much to avoid spoilers... but it was crazy.
It made me laugh, cry, fall in love, think, and honestly... what else do you need in a series? I can keep going on and on about this series but honestly I think you should just read it for yourself. I really don't think you'll regret it.
When someone asks me what the plot is, honestly, all I can say is “they play volleyball” HAHAHA… but it’s so much more than that.
PLOT: ★★★★★
The plot was so well thought of from the very beginning and when I re-read the manga I can’t believe the amount of foreshadowing Furudate actually placed. My mind was so blown… I just. No words. I am seriously in love.
ART STYLE: ★★★★★
The art style… *chef’s kiss* especially in the later arcs. There were so many matches but even then Furudate never failed to leave me breathless at each one.
CHARACTERS: ★★★★★
The character development here is THE BEST. HANDS DOWN. that I have ever come across. I fell in love with the so many characters in this series that I did not even think that was possible.
The character relationships... the character dynamics... their mindsets... they are all so perfectly well done and realistic GAHHHH I've said this so many time throughout this review BUT THEY JUST MADE ME FALL IN LOVE SO EASILY. I can't pick my favourite one but hinata and kageyama just hold a special place in my heart.
This connects to the themes but my favourite thing that was done with the characters here was that each one of them embodied a theme or a message that the author wanted to get across. Those are spoilers so I won’t really talk about it but just know that it was one of the main reasons that made me go so crazy about this series.

Honestly I basically thought the themes were just gonna be “teamwork” and “friendship”… while it is all that, Furudate sensei was able to make it even deeper. And the symbolisms? You are not ready.
I think the one that was focused on the most was “It’s not always about winning, it’s about growth”. But there were also so many smaller things that lead up to that bigger point: (1) we get our strength from others, (2) but you also need to make yourself dependable, (3) there is always room for improvement, (4) working hard is good but overworking yourself isn’t, (5) you are built on the small things you do everyday, (6) an ace's back should be an inspiration to your teammates (hi bokuto), (7)+++
The way I wrote it was very straight to the point but I was amazed at how Furudate tackled the so many messages that I received from this series.

Honestly I basically thought the themes were just gonna be “teamwork” and “friendship”… while it is all that, Furudate sensei was able to make it even deeper. And the symbolisms? You are not ready.
I think the one that was focused on the most was “It’s not always about winning, it’s about growth”. But there were also so many smaller things that lead up to that bigger point: (1) we get our strength from others, (2) but you also need to make yourself dependable, (3) there is always room for improvement, (4) working hard is good but overworking yourself isn’t, (5) you are built on the small things you do everyday, (6) an ace's back should be an inspiration to your teammates (hi bokuto), (7)+++
The way I wrote it was very straight to the point but I was amazed at how Furudate tackled the so many messages that I received from this series and how fulfilling it was at each turn.

In my opinion, this isn't comedy nor do I think it means to be. Which honestly, is not something I knew going in because of all the mismarketing this book is on. The main character is arguably on the autism spectrum but aside from that it also tackles ableism, sexism, misogyny, mental health, and conformity while micro-analyzing a specific character's situation while feeling like it relates to society on a macro-societal scale, most especially Japanese society.
And for that, I personally enjoyed it and loved the character study. I need more Asian-Lit in my life.

I realized that a lot, if not all, of Sanderson's works (that I have read) revolve around leadership, community, and compassion... and I love that
I AM HAPPY. I needed this comfort read. Animal companions are everything, especially if they are ghost dogs. This is more middle grade than YA but i loved it for the less drama and has a way better plot than a lot of the other YA mystery i have read.
The reason I didn’t rate this higher was simply because it didn’t connect to me personally or elicit that strong feelings out of me so I did not want anyone to think that just because I rated it 3 stars was because I didn’t like it that much. I just feel like I didn’t get much out of it aside from passive comfort.

If you’re intimidated by this book/series, don’t be. Seriously, don’t be. It’s a vast world but I assure you that Brando Sando has got your back and will hold your hand as he leads the way to a world that’s just brimming with imagination. You won't feel the 1000 pages (lol) as it passes you by.

I don't how Brandon Sanderson manages to weave characterizations that pulls you in while preparing all the foundations for the plot in the background. I didn't expect this book to have a found family aspect to it either but I welcome it. It explores anxiety and PTSD very openly and forces you to face the result of war on individuals.
The character relationships there and the development from what happened with Kaladin in the past was so heart warming and satisfying to read. Especially given the fact that they are in the middle of war… it felt like they had this own little family in the midst of all the death… *sobs and screams incoherently*
It's difficult to condense my feelings into a short review but I just love the way Brandon Sanderson builds his worlds as he makes you care for each character first before fully explaining the world that he has plopped you in the middle of.
It's multi-POV, action-packed, heartfelt, exciting, thrilling, and I am running out of adjectives. It had it's slow moments in the middle but I think thats just how it is with Sanderson before he pulls an ending that sweeps you off your feet. I'm sure someone has already said it but the ending is surely explosive. Each plot point truly makes you appreciate every detail that Sanderson worked into it to get you so invested in the first place.
I really fell in head first.

I feel like this book took out all of my stress from real life and decided that I should care more about time jumping beings(?) that just want to love and live.
It's short but it hits-- even though I barely had any idea what was going on the first time. I was just jumping through time portals with the characters and watching their story unfold. And there's nothing more beautiful, I think, than reading about characters that make you fall in love with falling in love.
If there's something you should know, it's that I am a total sucker for writing letters. Both in the real world and as a plot device in books. There's something so rewarding and timeless about receiving/sending letters to someone which I think the book brought to life, both literally and metaphorically. The prose is written so beautifully (I'm not even exaggerating) and in a way that even though my thoughts were all over the place, I couldn't help but care for whatever the heck was going on.
If you were following, you know that I had to reread this book twice to grasp what was going on and even now... I'm still not quite sure about the details (lol) but I understand the ending better.
This book is basically about Red and Blue (yes, those are their names) who are on opposite sides of this, kind of, time war that's going on at some point in time, at some place that both exists and doesn't exist. Then they send letters to each other and... in comes the angst. At least that's how I got it because you need a bucket of braincells to get what's going on. Which isn't a bad thing, me and my 2 braincells were just hanging on by a thread. I probably would have given this 5-stars if I had more braincells to spare.
But you guys, the character dynamics. in this book. The letter interactions and "physical interactions" were so well balanced that it felt so real and alive. Not to mention the SAPPHIC REALNESS that I didn't know I needed.
This book felt like hope and love in the midst of chaos and in this pandemic.... I think that's all we need sometimes

some reasons why this might not be for you:
• the plot takes ages to develop since the changes in narration takes up a lot of page time
• if you don't vibe the mysterious atmosphere, you might find it grueling to read
• the magic system is very straight to the point and explained plainly
• if you don't like reading from constantly changing points of view that focuses more on character interactions and character build ups
some reasons why this might be for you:
• mysterious prose
• complicated characters with heartwarming character dynamics
• reluctant hero trope
• dark, gruesome, with some slight steampunk vibes
• unique magic system
• animal companion (very cute)
• society-normalized LGBTQ+ relationships
• The Fifth Season x Mistborn vibes
• multilayered plot

The setting itself reminded me of Mistborn wherein this beaten-down town/city is ruled by this mysterious ruler locked up in a castle + with all the mystery surrounding the world-building. One of the main characters of this story is the heir of said ruler. However, there’s a chance that she might lose her chance if she doesn’t prove herself in some unconventional way, which was surprising to me. All I’ll say is that it deals with the lost memory concept in Fantasy and that was the aspect that really hooked me in the beginning.
The fact that multiple characters in this story didn’t know who they were and so we didn’t know who they really were… was so tantalizing to me? It made the story extra intriguing to read by adding that mystery aspect. The pages actually flew by. It’s so interesting being able to explore the dark, gruesome, almost steampunk kind of magic system that feels like you are unravelling a mystery that is already falling apart at the seams.
It’s funny because I know the title is called “The Bone Shard Daughter” but I didn’t expect the magic to… actually involve bone shards. The bone shards are used to power these, sometimes haphazardly composed, constructs that are made to function for certain things like guard animals, spies, etc. which gave the steampunk feel.
The complicated sibling but not-sibling relationship between Lin and Bayan got me so intrigued that I was excited every time Bayan was on the page. I was living and breathing for the dynamic believe me. This first book is character driven for the most part but there’s an underlying plot keeping everything moving behind the scenes. Which I’m starting to realize is the only time that I’m fine with slow paced plots.
i really took my time reading this book and i need to say that every. single. page. of. slow. paced. plot. progression. is totally worth it because it gave way into each of the character’s heads and get to know their motives/personalities . I usually can’t stand relatively slow paced books but as usual, there are exceptions because these characters are TOP TIER :”)
One of my favorite tropes in fantasy is when the main character/s stumbles into becoming a “hero” or reluctantly takes up that kind of position. We see that in Stormlight Archives with Kaladin and we see that in Jovis in this book.
I loved how the themes on complications of ruling and leadership were dealt with as it was exemplified by perspectives from those at the top of the ruling body to the bottom. Every time fantasy books writes POVs from two characters in opposing social standings given the fantastical world that they are set in.... so much dimension is added to the world-building while keeping things interesting. The mood was a lot lighter than I thought it would be, especially given the body horror (seriously, please read the content warnings at the bottom of this review).
all of the characters start off the story in very unique roles and positions that it was so satisfying watching them come together.
Though it isn’t a romance novel the side romances made me feel so hopeful. It showed how someone can love you that much while still being aware of every single one of your flaw. I do wish we get more of our sapphic duo in the next book.
↣ Very highly recommended if you like dark magic systems with complicated characters set in a kingdom that is falling apart. Especially ones that deal with themes of ruling and "what really is right". Bonus points for you if you like cute animal companion dynamics because this one is adorable. ↢
