LOID AND YOR ARE SO COOL BYE.

I LOVE THEM SO MUCH IM LOSING MY MIND. This family dynamics is everything.

and loid is so cool.

and the relationship between loid and yor make me so giddy. even Anya with both her parents huhuhu.

Warning: I am an emotional wreck but I don't care because I would die for Julian and Mark Blackthorn

I think a more accurate title for Cassandra Clare is Queen of Angst and Heartache

OHMYGOD.... IM.... THIS BOOK.

I have successfully passed away.

“People say we’re unlucky because we don’t have parents.
But I think they’re unlucky because they don’t have a brother like mine.”

currently binge-ing the the movies again... i guess it’s that time of the year

I just binged all the movies and feel like re-reading the series :")

Nghi Vo's writing style. I love it. That's it.

This whole book was so calming to read and I still don't know the reason why.

One of my favorite things about short stories is when they are able to pack so many themes and world building in to a small package. AND THIS WAS THAT. It’s basically a story within a story as the narrator is telling a tale to a certain character within the book itself. I will forever be terrible at summarizing short stories because I always feel like anything I say is a spoiler.

It was so rich in chinese/asian culture that you would be able to feel in the writing even if you were not initially aware of it. The author was able to translate her emotions so strongly within the plot that it was bursting with life. You have no idea how thrilled I am that this is a series because it is exactly my type of storytelling... and I need more.

Don't you just love it when a cover matches the tone of the book so well? The artistic, light, flowery-feeling that the cover is giving off is exactly the mood of the story.

Definitely a book that you find me recommending to people just because of how much it allowed me to appreciate that much more the importance of diverse literature in telling stories that needs to be told.

I want to tell you what I did not like about this book as to why it wasn't a 5 star, but I really can't.

Read for an empowering and heartfelt story that takes on a modern handmaid's tale (so as they say). If you're still looking for the perfect book to start your 2021, highly recommend trying this out. A short story that will truly warm your ice cold heart and feels like it's taking you on an adventure in to a rabbit hole.

““How do you live with it watching you?”
“As you live with anything I suspect, you bear it or you end it.”

With my mouth stuffed with mushroom, I didn’t say that you could also find the beauty in it.”

DNF @40%

I tried to read this for the past 3-4 months and my loan kept running out on me because I could not get through it within the time frame, which is usually never a problem for me. I have to say that I have nothing exactly negative to say about this book other than there was nothing that pushed me enough to finish it. Granted, I think this book had the bad luck to always fall into my hands whenever I felt the slumpiest. I was just never in the mood whenever I picked it up and I don’t want to force myself more than I have.

I think I was just looking for something more adventurous and out of this world rather than something more contemporary.

The book had a lot more world building than I expected for a standalone, especially with the 40% that I read. As you may be well aware, it does feature a transgender and mlm romance (which I enjoyed for the time that we had).

My favorite part of reading Latinx is always hearing words that we also use in Filipino so that’s partly what intrigued me about the synopsis of the book. There was that bit about gender and language that I really liked that I find doesn’t get discussed much in books.

“Navigating pronouns was a minefield when pronouns were based on gender.”

At the end of day, I tried really hard and I think the timing for me and this book was just not it. I really think it’s a personal preference because I feel like I would have loved this if I consumed it in some other way, at some other time.

-----------------
[2] you can give me back my book now... just sayin... i finally have time...

[1] I didn't read this fast enough so libby returned my book :)) and so I will continue reading this when I get my loan back

this is a good book. 5+ STARS!!!

It was a heavy read and it honestly took me a long time to actually finish but I have to say that it did not go under my expectations. I did not expect for them to all actually die but I guess that is bound to happen when death is your narrator. I loved it so much and actually felt the emotions. Still can't believe they all died like that but I guess that is life.

Before reading this I was surely convinced that I would be one of those who would “walk away from Omelas” because who would want to live in a society that lets a child suffer? I think my mistake there was assuming that it was an easy decision.

I mean if you want something thought-provoking and disturbing.... this is incredibly realistic in the most extreme ways.

“The trouble is that we have a bad habit, encouraged by pedants and sophisticates, of considering happiness as something rather stupid. Only pain is intellectual, only evil interesting”

Let's face it, is leaving better than staying? Do we know that leaving Omelas will actually help solve the problem? Is it that we just can't live with the idea that someone is suffering while we relatively are living in happiness? Is it really worth condemning everyone by letting the child go?

Can you actually walk away from the problem? Or would you rather stay and take care of the children who aren't condemned in the basement? What are you willing to compromise for your so-called "happiness"?

“It is because of the child that they are so gentle with children.”

This might be the line that hit me the most and ultimately made me question my initial stance. Luxury is called luxury because of the people that do not have it. Whether we like it or not, we take care of things when we know what it means to neglect them. We are all probably living in Omelas right now. And I don't mean that people (or one child for the sake of the majority) deserve to suffer but if you think that the society we live in right now is free from suffering and either leaving or staying is an easy decision... then you have not seen the child.

I don't know what the solution is or if there even is one. But Ursula K. Le Guin challenges us to face the reality that sometimes we look away from, choose to ignore, or have never been challenged with in the first place.

“Yet it is their tears and anger, the trying of their generosity and the acceptance of their helplessness, which are perhaps the true source of the splendor in their lives.”

The afterword of my copy had this closing statement that made me question my already questionable opinion so here it is for you:

“We already live here -- in the narrow, foul, dark prison we let our ignorance, fear, and hatred build for us and keep us in, here in the splendid, beautiful city of life...”

This conclusion is going to take into consideration BTS' interpretation of it in their album "You Never Walk Alone" because a huge part that was pointed out in this book about the "ones who walk away" is the fact that they, indeed, walk alone.

I like to think that the ones who walk away from Omelas to that place that "they seem to know where they are going" can be equivalent to a world we are hoping to achieve where children do not need to suffer. That "walking alone" could probably mean carrying the baggage ourselves and refusing the help of others when we need it. We know it's possible to walk out but it's a daunting journey to take alone. I don't think the book ever even said that Omelas is the only place where you can find happiness and luxury?

You can argue that we can never really walk away from the suffering and sadness in our lives and I would agree with you. But do we believe that suffering needs to exist because those are the "rules" of the game of life like in Omelas or is it that we are just too scared to walk alone, out of the game or "happiness" that we have known just to keep walking for who knows how long but we are sure exists? In that line, who even said that we have to walk out alone? For all the "rules" that Omelas had, this was the one part that did not read to me as such.

Again, who knows what the answer really is but perhaps the one thing I learned is that maybe we don't have to walk out of Omelas alone... and wouldn't that be a little less scary?

To me, there is no right or wrong because when is anything ever as simple as that. Every person's interpretation will differ which is, I think, ultimately the reason why a place like Omelas could exist and why we feel it is so closely tied to our own.

This counts as my review for the whole Haikyuu!! manga

”You don’t win alone.
That’s just how it is.”

READ FOR: best character developments and themes that I have ever encountered
READING LEVEL: Level 1-3 out of 5

*All of my reviews are as spoiler-free as possible unless stated otherwise*

I don’t think I’ll ever have enough words to express how much I love this manga and anime series but I’ll try anyway. But I just need to make it known that this has changed my view in anime and manga forever. I caught up with this manga in the last 30 or so chapters but I won’t say much to avoid spoilers... but it was crazy.

It made me laugh, cry, fall in love, think, and honestly... what else do you need in a series? I can keep going on and on about this series but honestly I think you should just read it for yourself. I really don't think you'll regret it.

When someone asks me what the plot is, honestly, all I can say is “they play volleyball” HAHAHA… but it’s so much more than that.

PLOT: ★★★★★
The plot was so well thought of from the very beginning and when I re-read the manga I can’t believe the amount of foreshadowing Furudate actually placed. My mind was so blown… I just. No words. I am seriously in love.

ART STYLE: ★★★★★
The art style… *chef’s kiss* especially in the later arcs. There were so many matches but even then Furudate never failed to leave me breathless at each one.

CHARACTERS: ★★★★★
The character development here is THE BEST. HANDS DOWN. that I have ever come across. I fell in love with the so many characters in this series that I did not even think that was possible.

The character relationships... the character dynamics... their mindsets... they are all so perfectly well done and realistic GAHHHH I've said this so many time throughout this review BUT THEY JUST MADE ME FALL IN LOVE SO EASILY. I can't pick my favourite one but hinata and kageyama just hold a special place in my heart.

This connects to the themes but my favourite thing that was done with the characters here was that each one of them embodied a theme or a message that the author wanted to get across. Those are spoilers so I won’t really talk about it but just know that it was one of the main reasons that made me go so crazy about this series.

*cough* hinata kageyama atsumu sakusa bokuto kita noya ushijima tendou tsukki suga kenma kuroo *cough* +++

Note: if you think this series is focused on only 1 team... you're in it for A RIDEEEEEE

I'm getting chills just looking at and remembering these panels ^^

THEMES: ★★★★★
Honestly I basically thought the themes were just gonna be “teamwork” and “friendship”… while it is all that, Furudate sensei was able to make it even deeper.

I think the one that was focused on the most was “It’s not always about winning, it’s about growth”. But there were also so many smaller things that lead up to that bigger point: (1) we get our strength from others, (2) but you also need to make yourself dependable, (3) there is always room for improvement, (4) working hard is good but overworking yourself isn’t, (5) you are built on the small things you do everyday, (6) an ace's back should be an inspiration to your teammates (hi bokuto), (7)+++

The way I wrote it was very straight to the point but I was amazed at how Furudate tackled the so many messages that I received from this series.

THE TIMING. OF EVERYTHING. JUST MAKES SENSE.

It’s so realistic that I want to cry. (I actually already did… a lot of times.)

You should understand that I made this review weeks after I finally calmed down about this series cuz I was really going crazy about it HAHAHA if you have finished this series too or met me while I was reading this, you know what I’m talking about ;)

I'll keep this series close to my heart until the grave. You cannot convince me otherwise.
