This so easily could have been a 5-star read for me, and in fact it was up until that choice of ending. It's hard to reconcile such phenomenal world building and a gripping plot with an ending that I absolutely hated. Pretty much every thread was left unresolved and not in a satisfactory way - it almost felt more like the book had to stay under a certain page count and things stopped mid-story. This was marketed as a standalone, but it either needed to be a duology or have more elements wrapped up. Whether endings are happy, sad, neat and tidy, or ambiguous they need to leave the reader with some feeling of satisfaction and that was just missing for me.

To be completely honest, I thought I had checked out Gladwell's "Revenge of the Tipping Point" which came out in late 2024, but I'm glad I listened to this. Some points haven't aged well in the past 25 years (for instance, I'd recommend reading "Humankind" by Rutger Bregman for more up-to-date information on the Stanford Prison Experiment, which has since been debunked), but there's still a lot of interesting and inspiring information for anyone looking for encouragement on how to make both our society and world better places.

Not quite as strong as volume 1, but still interested to see how things continue to unfold.

Narrator was 10/10 but the pacing didn't work for me.
