I wish this book had kept with the third person POV that the rest of the series uses instead of switching to first person and I think the pacing struggled in this novel.

The Forever Sea was one of my top reads of 2021: it had everything I was looking for in an environmental fantasy and I LOVED it. I couldn't wait to continue to explore this world and see how things came together in the next book and waited (somewhat) patiently as the sequel was delayed several times from fall 2021 until eventually early 2023. Suffice to say, The Endless Song was not the story I had hoped for. The first book had so much potential for me, but this honestly felt like the author decided they didn't want to write anymore in this series but was still contracted for a sequel. I was incredibly disappointed with how things progressed and eventually ended.

To be honest, I could have done without the romance and I wish Klune had been able to write the story he wanted to (as he hints in the acknowledgements).

Thank you to Macmillan/Tor-Forge for sending me an ARC of this title. I received this copy for free and this review contains my honest opinions.

Although I love hard sci-fi stories, I don’t think I was the target audience for this book. In hindsight I probably should have read To Sleep In A Sea of Stars first, but Fractal Noise didn’t seem like it needed the context or world-building already established in order to orientate yourself. My biggest issue with this story was the characters: I didn’t like any of their personalities, their choices, or how they were portrayed throughout the book. I also did not enjoy the ending and really expected there to be more story when I turned the page.

Even though this wasn’t the title for me, thank you again to the publisher for sending me a free ARC.
