Ms Woodson's writing is such a treat. The poetical free verse just rolls. The descriptions of time with her grandfather were what took this book from 4 to 5 stars. My mistake was reading the ebook from the library which doesn't allow me to mark my favorite parts. Will definitely read again.

It is impossible to rate or review this book on its own merits. If there was no TKAM, this book is a 3. A 4 if you realize it is a draft manuscript and not a polished final work. Yet holding it to the standards of Lee's fine characters, endearing small portraits of southern life and gut wrenching scenes of injustice she leads us through in TKAM this book is a 2. But it tells its own story, it had its own theme and place in our conscience.

This book was written in an elegant balance of being for children, but touching an adult heart too. Although anthropomorphism is frowned on in my professional life,in my fiction-loving free time it is allowed! This author does it in a subtle and genuine way. My oldest two children have read this book and I will be reading it to the youngest when she is a bit older. A very sweet story.

An engaging writing technique of alternating chapters in alternating universes bases on a minor yes-or-no decision. Your standard chic lit but that twist made it more memorable. Perfect end of summer reading. I'd read her next book.
