I wouldn't even have given 2 stars if it wasn't for the last 10%
----
To sum up :"he was fast/strong/intelligent etc. But I was faster/stronger/smarter"
Characters are shallow and I couldn't care less about Darrow. The plot is more or less Hunger Games on Mars.

This Eastern Asian inspired epic fantasy novel tells the story of the Matsuda family, who are tasked with protecting their country from threats both external and internal.
The story follows two main characters: Mamoru a teenager who is struggling to live up to his father's expectations and master his own magical abilities, and his mother, Misaki. She grew up far from her current home, and has lived a life that is very contrary to the strict, traditional lifestyle she’s led since marrying into the Matsuda legacy. She has fulfilled her role of wife and mother while avoiding her violent past but it seems as if forces are brewing that will force her to once again take up a sword.
While I often find that multiple points of view can be distracting or unnecessary in a story, that was not the case with The Sword of Kaigen. Each point of view added depth and complexity to the narrative and helped to enrich the overall story. I found that each character's perspective was distinct and contributed significantly to the plot and themes of the book.
The book delves into themes of politics, propaganda, family, duty, and the impact of violence. The worldbuilding is rich and immersive, and the characters are well-developed and complex. The story is heartwrenching and emotionally charged, and I found myself crying while reading it.
Overall, The Sword of Kaigen is a must-read for fans of epic fantasy. The themes and characters are powerful and poignant, and the worldbuilding is top-notch.
One of my favorites read of 2022!
