"The history of the Black Tudors in an aspect of British history that deserves a wider audience... We thought we knew Tudor England, but this book reveals a different country, where an African could earn a living, marry and have a family, testify in a court of law, or even whip an Englishman with impunity."
An excellent and well researched book. The book focuses on 10 black individuals who lived during the Tudor period. A must read on Black British history.

The Victorian biography is very different to the modern one. This mainly contained commentary based on Charlotte's letters, which were quoted greatly. A lot of information was twisted and left out to fit Gaskell's narrative and portrayal of Charlotte. For the Brontë fans, it is a recommended read but should be read critically.
"To some merchandisers, they are no longer human beings, but cartoon figures whose bloody images can be printed onto T-shirts, whose deaths can be laughed about on postcards and whose entrails decorate stickers. Is it any wonder that there has been no public appetite to examine the lives of the canonical five, when they have never seemed real or of any consequence to us before?"
A brilliant account about the lives of the five women who were brutally murdered in the late 1880s. Rubenhold has given these women back their identity, history and their dignity. A must read.

It's my second time reading this novel and I just can't get into it. A novel about the Luddites sounds interesting but Brontë's writing for this book is not as gripping as it is in Jane Eyre and Villette.
Brontë, at the time of writing, was annoyed that people started to assumed that "Currer Bell" was actually a woman. In this work she tries to write in a more "masculine" manner to throw contemporary readers off. Due to this, Shirley, in my humble opinion, is not as good as her other two novels - however, it's still better than The Professor. It's not her usual style and it shows.
On a final note, I have to say I really hate how the story ends in regards to Shirley. It was a major disappointment.

An enjoyable cosy read. Unfortunately, Anne and her family are secondary characters in this. The story follows the Meredith children and the scrapes they get into. This book is more heavy in religious tone which doesn't really bother me - but it's mentioned a lot.
A great idea to have a story centred on Cassandra Austen. Unfortunately, I found the parts set in 1840 a bit dull and the parts looking back on Cassandra's memories of Jane, a bit flat in terms of the character.
