I’ve always liked green mythology so when I saw there was a book about the origins of the witch Circe, I wanted to pick it up.
The read was fine, I enjoyed reading about green gods and heroes and legends and monsters once more, and circes own story was finely told. I had a lack of enthusiasm while reading this book however, the pacing simply felt slow which may be due to the writing style.
Circe’a journey as more mortal then human amongst the gods, but more god then human amongst mortals was quite interesting to see paralleled, and her time on Aiaia seemed like a gift more then exile. But I found myself sad whenever a man came into her life. Circe being a woman content to be left to her own devices, filling her days with witchcraft and animal husbandry and gardening was the exact cottagecore fantasy escapism so many of us long for today in our 9/5 capitalist work life.
All in all a nice book if you like Greek mythology, but I found myself missing snarky humor or exiting moments, thanks to the level headed telling of the story.
