I loved this book! The whole thing had such a nice and warm atmosphere to me! Quite mild spoiler under tag:
I really enjoyed that while it could have, the main conflict in this story wasn't between the main characters. There was proper communication and they listened to eachother, to explanations of misunderstandings.
I also loved the note at the end, explaining more about the real history of places and events mentioned, and the thoughts around writing about places that maybe don't have the nicest history. I definitely recommend this book for an end of year read :D

This book was the perfect swoop into the holiday season for me. It was set around Christmas and New Year's, but it wasn't vital to the main plot point, which makes this read ideal for mid november :D I liked meeting both main characters, and who doesn't enjoy a good hidden identity plotline :D
It's probably because I don't read a lot of historical fiction (let alone books actually written back then) but in the beginning the dialogue felt a bit unnatural and stiff to me. Once I was properly 'in' the book, I didn't notice it anymore though.

You can tell from the way it was written that the author is personally familiar with the mental ilnesses that occur in the book. They hit home hard, which was both nice (seeing something you(ve) struggle(d) with mentioned, but it also kicked my brain into a 'ah yes, I know how to feel like that' funk, which was less nice :P
Overall I really liked the book, the format with the episodes and the scenes at the end, and how diverse and queer the characters all were. The ace rep was also very well done and nice to see!

This book was so good. I intentionally took my time reading it because I didn't want to rush through and then not really remember half.
It's not a very happy book, lots of bad stuff happens on many levels, but it's engaging and enraging and good.
