  • Fantasy Romance
  • Urban/Contemporary: Raleigh, NYC, Paris, San Fran
  • Dual POV (single narrator on audio, but tbh it is very well done)
    • Elle
      • Chinese descendent of the god of medicine
      • Calligraphy/jade magic
      • Living a secret life with her brother because of family drama
    • Luc
      • Half elf, half French/German more specifically he speaks French and Alsatian
      • Secret agent (unknowingly) tracking down Elle's brother
      • HE COOKS

This is a book about choosing happiness. I loved it so much! The magic was absolutely fascinating and a joy to read about. The world building is lush, the writing is beautiful and descriptive. I really enjoyed the character growth with both Elle and Luc. Luc's journey of dealing with his horrible job/overbearing boss was REAL
when he finally quits I was near tears
Like I will bodily protect Luc til the ends of this earth!

I'm literally not going to shut up about this book til more people read it!

3/5 (was not expecting the spice, but it was so good!)

Spicy Princess Diaries (1&2) and personally I was here for it.

Better than the first one, Rhys is just a better character
  • Bodyguard romance
  • Age gap (~10 years?)

I didn’t really connect to either of the main characters and I’m a bit indifferent to the marriage of convenience trope. So this one was alright but I will continue the series

Gossip Girl meets Get Out is totally the most accurate description of this book.

This wasn’t as thriller-y as I was expecting. To me it was just more like a mystery. I did really enjoy the two main characters and the queer representation.

Written as a series of letters to friends (and really to themself) Akwaeke Emezi's memoir gives a deep and vulnerable look into their mind and unique point of view. I listened to the audiobook, but was very glad I own a copy so I could highlight quotes to come back to. While covering some difficult topics, Emezi's gorgeous writing really shines through and even though as a memoir it centers on their experience, I found many relatable parts focused on the struggle of living in our current harsh world.

  • Trans feminine MC
  • the magic of art
  • Group parenting (Redemption has 3 parents)
  • the power of facing fear

Is an angel not always a hunter, is a hunter not always an angel? it replied. As long as the target is a monster.

Akwaeke Emezi can't miss! Their beautiful writing brings to life a heartfelt story about the 'monsters' that hide away in our world(s) and how we can face them, even in fear. In Pet, Emezi has created a utopian city called Lucille where monsters have been driven out, they 'don't exist anymore.' But Jam and her best friend Redemption learn that no matter what the adults say, if we forget about monsters that's how they find ways to come back.

DID NOT FINISH: 27%

Yeah I can't do this book as a vegan. I've read other cooking based rom-coms and there was just one too many eye rolls situations for me
  1. Eating fish/seafood is not vegetarian
  2. Cows are not 'dangerous' - no more so than a horse which is a similar sized animal
  3. Dairy farms do not milk cows by hand - describing it this way just perpetuates this fake reality that cows on dairy farms are 'happy' and not the reality that they are continually abused for their milk.
  4. Apparently if you don't like barbecue you're now a fascist (that was the last straw and I really don't care that it was a joke)

If you're looking for a rom-com with cooking and trans rep perhaps try Chef's Kiss (which has less eye roll food situations).
