The beginning of this was very interesting, but it kinda lost me in the middle. I've heard book 2 is much better so I might continue on audio.

did w/ audio narration which was  good

🌶️3/5 from what I remember it was open door but not overly descriptive

  • paranormal romance
    • Florence can see ghosts
    • her family owns a funeral home
  • small town setting
  • it's fairly slow burn due to the... circumstances
  • family dynamics are a big focus
  • diverse, queer side characters

This book deals heavily with grief and the death of a parent, so it should be approached in the right headspace. Florence's Ex is a POS. I think for a romance this was a bit light on the romance and more focus on Florence's past, her family and like what's going on with her career.

  • Dancing With the Stars reality tv show
    • she's a dancer on the show aiming to make it to the finals
    • he's a backwoods Alaska man from his own reality tv show

I really enjoyed the character growth of both MCs. Wished they had dual narration for this audio.

  • She's a Caribbean heiress to a rum distillery
  • He's a Scottish lord who owns a whiskey distillery
  • They can't take over these businesses unless they are married ;)
    • Marriage of convenience

This was a cute historical romance!

Lauren talks about stardom and being an actress/working in Hollywood. A tad about Gilmore Girls (but mainly not). If you read her first book and enjoyed it this is a very quick read and follow up to that.
Narrated by the author, which we love.

This was a super cute cozy witchy book!! A group of older witches live together and are trying to save their property from literally the patriarchy. I honestly would love to end up living with all my besties in my old age like these women! There’s a little bit of mystery because one of their friends is gone for part of the book, until it’s revealed why but it’s a bit complicated.

I had a bit of trouble discerning some of the different povs on audio.

I really just couldn’t get attached to either character and the third act break up really made me mad

Schwab’s writing had really improved since writing the original trilogy. I’m not sure why I was under the impression that previous characters were going to be less of the focus, but that was not the case! For readers of the original series this is great because we all love those characters, but it does mean this cannot be read without having read the original trilogy. Which is fine! Perhaps I just had a wrong impression. There are new and interesting characters introduced, but I’d actually say more of the book takes place from old characters pov.

Having just read the original trilogy earlier this year I felt a lot of the story was spent explaining things that I already knew. Perhaps this was done for people who had read the series long ago, but I found those parts to be rather redundant. My other criticism is that Schwab tends to tell the same plot point from multiple characters’ POVs without really adding much in each case so there were parts that seemed repetitive plot wise. Overall the plot seemed to be setting up for the rest of this new trilogy.

This was clearly a labor of love for a world and characters the author truly loves. There were many squeal-worthy moments between old characters. Fans of the series will find a lot of fun in this book (hence my personal high rating for this book).

I'm not much of a classics or horror reader (even tho it wasn't scary horror imo), so this wasn't really for me. But I think I can definitely see the influences of this book into modern horror media.

I found the pregnancy because of a lack of birth control thing to be rather ridiculous
