I appreciate plotless, meandering books but this one was a bit too plotless and meandering for me. I still want to check out The Undocumented Americans though!

I enjoyed moments of what I read but felt like something was missing. There were attempts at surrealism and horror but I feel like on the whole the collection could turn it up even more with the speculative elements. I was expecting something more along the lines of Bliss Montage or Cursed Bunny and unfortunately this did not deliver.

A Certain Hunger

Edited to add: I actually noped out when the narrator said his mouth tasted of "bourbon and ennui". The cream puff dick was just the cherry on top.

As soon as his dick was described like a cream puff I was out of there

I'm so sorry, I tried to enjoy this book and couldn't get into it. I know there's a big plot twist (which I already looked up and...wow) but I was so bored I couldn't get through it. And I know that Emily and Dawn are supposed to be unlikeable but they had literally zero redeeming qualities. Also, I wasn't a fan of the audiobook narration. I am willing to give Anna Dorn's new book, PERFUME AND PAIN, a shot because it sounds intriguing.

As soon as I saw how the gay relationship was written in this book I said NOPE.

Did not enjoy the narrative style of this book at all. The narrator being an amnesiac caused the book’s pace to drag tremendously. Additionally, the fact that she was in a child’s body and having sex with a grown adult made me uncomfortable. I am excited to check out Octavia Butler’s other works, but this was not a good starting point.

Started this for the laughs but don’t see myself coming back to this anytime soon.

I understand why people enjoy this book, but the stylistic writing choices the author made did not click with me.
