I enjoyed the chapters, but bringing them together as a book this way felt disjointed. Luckily, the author didn’t waste too much time with that. The chapters themselves felt very cinematic, dark, and compelling, like watching a short experimental horror film. I recommend the book, but I do think aspects of the overall plot were very underdeveloped and rely heavily on the individual chapter concepts to get by.

In the best way possible, this felt like a return to Palahniuk’s earlier style, aged up for the times and polished with tenure. Very captivating. I enjoy books that focus on one of the senses, something about writing a book about sounds is just… really funny.

I might pick it up again later but the pacing just doesn’t do it for me. I thought I’d connect more with his story, maybe I would with the later years, but the intro and his childhood unfortunately do not resonate with me. The writing is good, just not enough to keep me engaged in reading.
