A cute coming of age meets ghost story with a very real protagonist.

Fraction and Zdarsky began with an intriguing premise and totally surpassed my expectations in their execution of the first volume of Sex Criminals, leaving me with no good guesses as to how this story might continue to unfold. I found the writing to be both very funny, and thoughtful and honest.

Feeling like this is going to be the beginning of something big.

In a lot of ways I really enjoyed this book. But I think the trippy/dream sequence style was too opaque at times and I didn't really understand the meaning of it all. It made me feel through the characters' experiences and spoke to the pain of adolescence and trial to fit in, but didn't get all the way to something of substance and in the end left me with too much confusion to be totally satisfied.

Its powerful, diverse female characters are awesome, but this series hasn't really excited me yet. I think it definitely felt rushed, fight scenes over as soon as they'd begun, secrets uncovered as soon as they are introduced, but I don't know whether it just went too quickly for my taste or if there was also some depth or something else I felt lacking.

I was not left disappointed after devouring the Locke & Key series. The magic of Keyhouse is beautiful and terrible, the story suspenseful and haunting.
