While this book was absolutely a page turner, I found the experience of reading it to be fairly unpleasant. I think it's probably an objectively good book, it just didn't mesh with me. I will typically pretty gladly read a book to get to the hidden information which is dangled out of my reach precisely to compel me to read it, even if I hate that I'm so easily hooked. In this story the narrator had a mysterious accident and suffers from amnesia surrounding the event. No one in her family will tell her the things she doesn't remember, which gets tiresome after a while. Furthermore, the things that occupy her time in between were not completely engaging me, since it's mostly just hanging around their private island. The poetic style the narrator employs from time to time didn't work well for me and I'm not a big fan of an unreliable narrator because I have to wonder the whole time about what are the real truths. Probably should have seen that coming with the title of this book so I only have myself to blame. The experience of reading the book made me feel sad and anxious. And then the ending really messed me up (this was the best part of the book though.) Even though I didn't love this book I can tell I'll be thinking about it for a long time.

This book was SO freaking good. The magic system is well crafted, with both amazing possibilities but also significant constraints. This is a magic which can produce incredible changes in the world, disastrous backlash, and a serious drug. The real world fall out from such a magic is expertly woven into the story making a very fantastical story also powerfully believable. While showcasing this great magic in an epic adventure, this book never ceases to be equally about its characters' relationships to one another. Really awesome and thoughtful and riveting and touching, this is a book you don't want to miss.

I was worried about whether I'd "get" this book since I am not very familiar with sci fi TV. Fortunately, I found that even without a ton of background I giggled a lot and thoroughly enjoyed this meta story which pokes fun at the places we've been forced to suspend a lot of disbelief. Both funny and touching, the novel and three codas perfectly blended a lot of silly moments with startlingly beautiful portraits of the human spirit.

Maybe a little better than a three but this book had some serious failings in my opinion. It was definitely a quick and exciting read though and I enjoyed our heroes and look forward to reading more of them.

Seraphina was like a precious gem, and Shadow Scale was like a breathtaking mural of gems. It didn't just carry the story on, it expanded it in all directions. I felt like it started slow and ended too fast, but that didn't stop me from loving this book and all its rich characters and amazing setting like crazy. Seraphina's travels opened the world up and highlighted a beautifully constructed diversity and a setting that seemed to be rich beyond even what was given.

My interest in this thriller was driven, as it often is, by my care for the main characters. The three narrators were well crafted, three different shades of likable and unreliable. Some of the resolution fell a little short for me but overall I would definitely recommend. I wish I'd gotten to read it all in one or two sittings because I think that stopping and starting a million times always hurts this kind of book, but I just couldn't wait to start it til I had a proper uninterrupted period available.

I loved this book so much! The world building is incredible, the characters are beautiful. And Dragons! Really interesting Dragons. Seraphina's thoughts and feelings resonated deeply with me, and the other main characters were really well drawn as well, with infrequent exceptions.

This book was beautiful. Instant favorite. In Lisey's Story, King muses on the nature of creativity and the writing process once more, while also writing on the intimate inner life of a marriage, mental illness, the powerful bond of family, loss, all the while threading through classic creepy horror.

This book was pretty delightful. The premise is really interesting and the different magics are all so cool. I found the characters, the protagonist especially, to be pretty tiresome at first, but I grew to love them as they developed. There are some pieces of the book I didn't entirely love even still, but I don't want to give anything away. Still, I'm excited to listen to the next one!!

I learned about this book from a fairly poor review, but the premise was so intriguing I had to give it a shot anyway. The story could be really interesting, Parker spends every night watching others' dreams, getting no rest and slowly wasting away as a result. When he meets a girl whose dreams are so peaceful he can fall asleep in them, he thinks he's saved, until he starts to fear he's been stalking her in his sleep. Unfortunately, Parker was a pretty unpleasant narrator, mostly because I found the way he thought about women to be really skeevy and uncomfortable. The story felt tedious at first, then started to get pretty exciting, but then the resolution fell flat again for me. I think I just found the story kind of hard to believe, so it was difficult to really stay immersed in it. I wouldn't necessarily tell someone to NOT read this book, and I'm still considering reading the sequel, but I wouldn't highly recommend it either.
