Sly and atmospheric
This book is funny and super cute, but I already know that in two years I'll have forgotten everything that happens. I like the guy narrator; he's funny, adorable, and way too observant to be realistic. It reminds me a lot of the Tempest trilogy.
A surprisingly good sequel. Full of twists and turns.
I picked up this book because I thought it would be a fun romance with a Scottish theme. Unfortunately, it completely lacked romance, realism, and plot. But the worst part is that Emma is dumb. Just head-achingly, too-stupid-to-live, aggravatingly dumb. If you watch Crazy Ex Girlfriend or New Girl and think the main character is realistic, you might like this -- everyone else, don't waste the brain cells.
This didn't add a lot to the story for me; all I learned was that Reyes didn't know anything about his past until Charley touched him when he was in a coma. Otherwise it was a recap from his perspective of some old scenes. It felt inauthentic to me; he was too gentle and worshipping of Charley when in the books he is super controlling and aggressive.
Children are jerks, but I enjoyed the art.
There is nothing I love more than a sequel that delves deeper into the plots and characters from the first book, and Clark does it here in spades. This was a thrill ride of casework and crime and fantastic sidekicks.
