I'm getting kind of bored of her incompetence. She's been a bounty hunter for at least a year, and she still doesn't have bullets in her gun or lock her car doors? Really?
This disjointed novel leaps from decade to decade and narrator to narrator in an attempt to convey the strangeness and monstrosity of an island where human men are all married to selkies, women dragged from their seal bodies by a witch and kept on land by men who find them desirable. Lanagan spends so much time filling pages with frilly sentences that the story falls flat, and all you are left with is a bunch of shitty people whose motivations are never made clear. This book needed a grounding narrator or coherent plotline to make it work; unfortunately the most interesting thing about this story is the title.
A pretty boring version of Puss in Boots.
