I loved that even though it was short it felt complete. The mother of the mc disapproved of her being a lesbian, didn’t like her girlfriend, didn’t like that she smoked weed, but wanted to make amends toward their relationship. From the jump, it’s clear there’s something wrong with Mother. The relationship between them felt very much like my own. Parts of the plot twist felt unexpected but the ending was very unsatisfactory, mostly because I knew what was going to happen.

This was a retelling of The Fall of the House of Usher. I love Kingfisher’s writing style. However, the first half felt very slow to me, and then like everything happened all at once. I do have a fondness for brain controlling fungi though and as a retelling it was quite enjoyable.
