I had been looking forward to reading this book for a while and man, it did not disappoint. I devoured this book in less than two days and felt as though I was truly immersed in Starr’s world. Every single chapter made me cry at least once and I felt as though this told an all-too-familiar story of police brutality and the ongoing racism and oppression of people of colour with such great detail. This perspective is not one we hear often and no where near as in depth. The Hate U Give has lit a fire in my soul to speak up more often against the oppression of minorities and it’s a solemn reminder that the fight against prejudice is far from over. Everyone should read this.
It was very obvious that Sarah was trying to meet a certain word count because the main points of this book could have been summed up in about ten minutes. The extra fluff and bullshit she padded it out with was painful and annoying but I did find value in some of the key points. I didn’t hate it but an infographic would have sufficed.
