This book started out great and ended on a cliff hanger. Usually I'm bugged by books that end leading up to a sequel, since that just seems cheap to me, but this one had such a great story and characters I really can't wait to see what happens next! Oh, sure, it got a bit too mushy for my taste, but I loved Karou's character!
A very cute romance book that didn't make me want to throw up! Yay! Also, the culture references from 1996 made me often chuckle in remembrance. A fun little story!
Can I give this more than 5 stars? No seriously, I loved this book. It was so much fun to read that I couldn't put it down. There wasn't ridiculous drama or silly characters. Everyone was written well and acted within their character. The stepsister and stepmother were mean as heck and had me yelling at the book towards the end, but they also had their reasons besides plain' ol' hating Cinder. Also, all the sci-fi twists to the Cinderella story worked really well! And the Lunar Princess, UGH! She is a character you just love to hate, the little brat. Again, she was a well-written character because I couln't stop ranting about her to my confused fiance. He also said I was blaspheming when I said this book is better than Hunger Games. Yes, I stand by this exclamation, I liked it that much!
I think I made a really nice, simple, summary when I was discussing this book: "Too much if Tess. Too little dragons." It's true. I really liked Tess in the beginning, but she grew to be kind of a lackluster character and the book just dragged on. Another observation which ruined the book for me were the description of the dragons. Do they have chameleon eyes?! "One eye swivelling back, the other on me..." (pg 351), and the constant mention of "eye cups", I couldn't help but think of these dragons with derpy eyes facing different directions! Derpy dragons don't make for a very powerful or majestic image. Alas, this sequel was nowhere near as good as "Dragon's Keep".
It took me a while to finally getting around to reading this, eh? I've had a lot of patrons say they liked this book and it's been around for a while, but still hasn't lost its popularity. I guess I went into it thinking it was an extremely awesome book, but it's just okay. It wasn't bad by a long shot, but it was very simple. It was the big event towards the end that made me like it a bit more. I had been thinking to myself, "Jen, I like you, but you expect too much and you're not careful enough." I did like Luke's character. I listened to the audio book but didn't like the reader too much. I definitely want to read the rest, but I hope the suspense picks up a bit quicker. This book is a great read for a reluctant reader since it's easy to read and understand and a thin book.
This was a fun and refreshing book to read. A great mystery with some wonderful characters. I wish the cover wasn't so misleading though, but nowadays, the covers seem to be less about the book and more about Photoshopping young women into strange, hazy poses. Either way, this book was so good I don't even mind that the end sets up for a sequel (a usual pet peeve of mine).
