Murder After Christmas

This book was really boring. Well-written but dull.

This book seemed more like adding elements for shock value sake, rather than pushing the plot forward but my main issues were:

1. Pathologizing female m*sturbation: It was presented as part of the MC's pathology, and not as an absolutely normal occurrence for young women. This is overdone in media where the same subject for boys is presented as normal and often comedic.
2. EXTREMELY poor mental health rep: The author doesn't even name the mental illness. That indicates to me that she wanted to pick and choose symptoms that fit the story, rather than actual representation of mental health issues in the MC. The story presents a method of self-h*rm that is again based in shock value.
3. The FMC doesn't consider SA to be a violent crime and even argues with the MMC about being self-righteous when he states that a group of football plays SAing a young drunk girl was a violent crime because she thinks women consent even if they are intoxicated.

Once I found out who the killer was (someone else told me after I DNFed), I couldn't believe that it was the one person I thought "no way" because it is so OBVIOUS and overdone the entire time that I assumed it had to be a red herring. Glad I didn't waste the rest of my time.

Nothing wrong with the book it was mistakenly listed on a recommendation for black Caribbean authored books by mistakes. I picked it up intending to read that and discovered it was not.

Disclaimer: I received gifted copies of the first two books in exchange for an honest review.

I read the first book (Review: https://app.thestorygraph.com/reviews/4402f18f-8fb4-4c19-a65e-d74975cf751e) and decided to go ahead and read the second one in tandem to see if I liked it more.

Unfortunately, it relies on the same tropes that just seem honestly lazy to me. I ended up quitting around halfway through.

Again, it had a few elements that I really like and thought would be interesting. The shock horror theater along with the graverobbing aspect was great. However, we end up with the same tired reliance of the first book on bigotry. Instead of a homophobic town, we find an extremely racist villain. He refers to mexican immigrants as "stupid fence-hoppers" and more. There is also the weird body stuff again (not the graverobbing/dead body stuff). Focus on breasts in these books are ... I don't know what + casual fatphobia throughout.

To have such great elements and then be filled with the laziness of a bigoted villain with no better reasoning for his evil just comes off as lazy and empty.

This book is extremely boring at seems to at times equate the downsides of the KKK with the groups that opposed them …
