Will this be my favorite book of the year? Very likely. Wow wow wow
This was a fun read. I really liked the writer's tone and story telling for this mystery. Definitely will continue reading more from this series.
Magical. Mystery. Summer. Witches. Small town. Island vibes. Literally what more could I ask for.
I have very mixed feelings about this book. The southern charm I was looking for was woven into every aspect of this book, and it was very enjoyable. The characters were incredibly activated and believable, reminding me of the kind of people I grew up around. I also found the queer storyline to be nicely placed in the story and it was a lovely aspect of the book. But...that's really all I can say that was good with this book.
I found the book a little too fragmented to keep the plot easily readable. I love the snips and articles but I think they came so often I started to lose the story. In addition, as I mentioned in a previous update, I really couldn't get over the amount of racism interwoven into every aspect of this book. Again, I am not sure if Flagg thought it was a necessary aspect to set the book correctly in the timeline. Even so, it surely it didn't need to be so consistent and not with the inappropriate use of language. A point could've been made without being so abrasive. Even later in the book when the characters believed themselves as not being racist, their thinking was steeped in ignorance. It reminded me of The Help in that regard.
I don't know. It's giving...white feminism. Kinda disappointed. Wanted a charming 'slice of life' story but didn't realize it came with a heaping dollop of racism. Yucky.
